26 year old diesel car manages 119 mpg

Craig Henderson drove from Blaine, Washington to the Mexican border — a distance of 1,478 miles — without stopping to refuel. He burned 12.4 gallons for a record-breaking 119.1 mpg in a car he originally designed in 1984.

The Avion is a car Craig Henderson originally built with partner Bill Green way back in 1984 as a prototype for a high-mileage vehicle he hoped to sell. Commercial plans never came to fruition, but Henderson never abandoned the Avion. Over the years he's kept tinkering with it, improving its powertrain and aerodynamics along the way.- source

So, the Bail Out Motors Volt starts at $41,000?

ok... lol.

That sounds legit.

Diesel has always ruled! When in Europe and you're renting transportation you have to ask for a "gaz" (why you would ask beats me, just sayin) auto because the standard tranny, diesel powered vehicle is the rule. (though I like my vehicles just a bit bigger:D )

yeah! Diesel.

Why we don't see a diesel-electric hybrid is beyond me -- actually I know exactly why we don't see such a beast. Plans are drawn up to convert my '71 International Scout to Diesel electric. My calculations say it should get 45mpg. If built, it will be able to use plant oils as fuel.

Current daily ride: 1979 Mercedes 240d
Fuel: diesel/plant oils
Conversion Cost: $45 usd
mileage: 24mpg city/diesel , 22 mpg/oil (the oil is free)

Other project: electric plug in hot rod '26 T; assembled/cobbled from scratch (except the body panels). This one is still in planning stages.

Nearly two years after the introduction of the path-breaking plug-in hybrid, GM is still losing as much as ,000 on each Volt it builds, according to estimates provided to Reuters by industry analysts and manufacturing experts. GM on Monday issued a statement disputing the estimates.

Cheap Volt lease offers meant to drive more customers to Chevy showrooms this summer may have pushed that loss even higher. There are some Americans paying just ,050 to drive around for two years in a vehicle that cost as much as ,000 to produce.

And while the loss per vehicle will shrink as more are built and sold, GM is still years away from making money on the Volt, which will soon face new competitors from Ford, Honda and others.

GM's basic problem is that "the Volt is over-engineered and over-priced," said Dennis Virag, president of the Michigan-based Automotive Consulting Group.

Japan as well - http://presscore.ca/2011/?p=2497. It is not actually running on water, it is converting water to hydrogen, which is then combusted. There are puh-lenty of people looking into or who have inventions in this area http://peswiki.com/index.php/Directory: ... s_on_Water

I am shopping for a car and the dealer was bragging about how someone used the car I want to drive from Toronto to Quebec City on a tank of gas. I was thinking of this post and laughing sadly inside.
