The Living Earth Simulator

Post by SquidInk » 12-29-2010 10:11 PM

My guess is this will not be free & open source...
It could be one of the most ambitious computer projects ever conceived.

An international group of scientists are aiming to create a simulator that can replicate everything happening on Earth - from global weather patterns and the spread of diseases to international financial transactions or congestion on Milton Keynes' roads.

Nicknamed the Living Earth Simulator (LES), the project aims to advance the scientific understanding of what is taking place on the planet, encapsulating the human actions that shape societies and the environmental forces that define the physical world.

"Many problems we have today - including social and economic instabilities, wars, disease spreading - are related to human behaviour, but there is apparently a serious lack of understanding regarding how society and the economy work," says Dr Helbing, of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, who chairs the FuturICT project which aims to create the simulator.

The most ambitious simulation project? Not by a long shot. But certainly among the most ambitious simulation projects being widely reported on.
But how would such colossal system work?

For a start it would need to be populated by data - lots of it - covering the entire gamut of activity on the planet, says Dr Helbing.

It would also be powered by an assembly of yet-to-be-built supercomputers capable of carrying out number-crunching on a mammoth scale.

Although the hardware has not yet been built, much of the data is already being generated, he says.

For example, the Planetary Skin project, led by US space agency Nasa, will see the creation of a vast sensor network collecting climate data from air, land, sea and space.

In addition, Dr Helbing and his team have already identified more than 70 online data sources they believe can be used including Wikipedia, Google Maps and the UK government's data repository Data.gov.uk. - source

On the contrary, it will be free and open-source.....

The only way they can accomplish this is using a Beowulf. They had one set up a UBC a few yrs back that was used to compile seafloor data. It did it in a fraction of the time that a bank of Cray's would have taken.

Beowulf's are Linux-based parallel-processing computers.

Interesting observation megman.

FuturICT as a whole will act as a Knowledge Accelerator, turning massive data into knowledge and technological progress. In this way, FuturICT will create the scientific methods and ICT platforms needed to address planetary-scale challenges and opportunities in the 21st century. Specifically, FuturICT will build a sophisticated simulation, visualization and participation platform, called the Living Earth Platform. This platform will power Crisis Observatories, to detect and mitigate crises, and Participatory Platforms, to support the decision-making of policy-makers, business people and citizens, and to facilitate a better social, economic and political participation.

The drive to simulate everything, including human populations (planet wide) is driving much activity among the economic 'elite'.

Once these simulators are perfected, and have achieved a 'one to one granulation' - well, then the game is over. Or, at least the game will need to get weirder by orders of magnitude. Regular people will also need to be running 'free' simulators, simulating the corporate/state simulators. Then large groups of 'regulars' can act in unpredicted ways, and in doing so may thwart the predatory economicus.

An odd existence, no doubt.

Two good ones today...
Military software predicts Greek default

It’s official: Greece is going to default, and there’s nothing anybody can do about it.

That is, if you believe the word of a predictive software program called Senturion, first developed by U.S. consulting firm Sentia Group for use by U.S. military commanders in Iraq.

A release from the company explained that Senturion analyzed the positions of leading EU officials, private financial institutions and Greek political factions in the week following a critical parliamentary vote at the end of June.

That vote passed important austerity measures, but Senturion found that the Greek government “conclusively cannot deliver on all of the terms specified in the austerity package and most specifically privatization, setting the country on a course to possible sovereign default.”

The software, developed to help assess “life-and-death battlefield situations,” uses methodology based on Nobel Prize-winning bargaining theory and has completed more than 460 projects with 85% accuracy since its first contract with the U.S. Department of Defense in 2005.

check out this beowulf cluster in 2002 http://space-simulator.lanl.gov/ - was in top500 fastest clusters at the time, 665 gigaflops/s.

Now check out http://www.nvidia.com/object/preconfigu ... sters.html ONE of which does 665 gigaflops/s

Now: "A Japanese supercomputer capable of performing more than 8 quadrillion calculations per second (petaflop/s) is the new number one system in the world, putting Japan back in the top spot for the first time since the Earth Simulator was dethroned in November 2004, according to the latest edition of the TOP500 List of the world’s top supercomputers. The system, called the K Computer, is at the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science (AICS) in Kobe.

..

The K Computer, built by Fujitsu, currently combines 68544 SPARC64 VIIIfx CPUs, each with eight cores, for a total of 548,352 cores—almost twice as many as any other system in the TOP500. The K Computer is also more powerful than the next five systems on the list combined.

The K Computer’s name draws upon the Japanese word "Kei" for 10^16 (ten quadrillions), representing the system's performance goal of 10 petaflops. RIKEN is the Institute for Physical and Chemical Research. Unlike the Chinese system it displaced from the No. 1 slot and other recent very large system, the K Computer does not use graphics processors or other accelerators. The K Computer is also one of the most energy-efficient systems on the list. "

Algorithm predicts your location in 24 hours with 20-metre accuracy

A team from the University of Birmingham has won Nokia's Mobile Data Challenge with an algorithm that can predict where you'll be in 24 hours.

The software, developed by Mirco Musolesi, Manlio Domenico, and Antonio Lima, combines movement tracking with data from the people in your phone book. By looking at how someone's movements correlate with those of other people that they know, the algorithm can make guesses about where that person is going, even if it's a major change from their usual routine.

Previously, algorithms have successfully modelled an individual's regular movement patterns, but haven't coped well with breaks in that routine. By adding data from a user's social graph, the Birmingham team was able to overcome this, yielding an impressive accuracy level of 20 metres or so.
Wow... just wow. This is all being done for economic reasons. It's not a direct conspiracy, it's a function of the business model.

http://the-scientist.com/2012/08/29/bos ... r-sensors/
The Boston subway system will soon host simulated biological weapon attacks as the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) conducts tests of sensors designed to detect the presence of biological agents in metropolitan areas.

After temporarily shutting down the transportation system, S&T will release small quantities of harmless and inactive bacteria into subway tunnels under Beantown and monitor the spread of the dead microbes using newly developed sensors. The bacterium, Bacillus subtilis, is considered nontoxic even when alive and active.

S&T will be conducting the tests—which are part of its Detect-to-Protect (D2P) project—for the next 6 months, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Anne Hultgren, director of the D2P project, said that the tests will help determine if the new sensors, designed by a suite of contractors, are up to snuff. “While there is no known threat of a biological attack on subway systems in the United States, the S&T testing will help determine whether the new sensors can quickly detect biological agents in order to trigger a public safety response as quickly as possible,” she said in a statement.

The new tests come at a precarious time for US anti-bioterrorism efforts. Last week, the Los Angeles Times reported that BioWatch, the federal government’s key biological attack detection system, is prone to false alarms—many of which have occurred since its inception in 2003.
Good grief. I don't where to start with this one.

Security cameras that watch you, and predict what you'll do next, sound like science fiction. But a team from Carnegie Mellon University says their computerized surveillance software will be capable of "eventually predicting" what you're going to do.

[...]

The U.S. government has funded the development of so-called automatic video surveillance technology by a pair of Carnegie Mellon University researchers who disclosed details about their work this week -- including that it has an ultimate goal of predicting what people will do in the future.

"The main applications are in video surveillance, both civil and military," Alessandro Oltramari, a postdoctoral researcher at Carnegie Mellon who has a Ph.D. from Italy's University of Trento, told CNET yesterday.
Lets get real. These simulations are being developed for economic reasons. In the end, every action will be an economic one. A tax will be collected or a fine issued on every movement. No crime will go undetected, because the currently the ones that do represent lost revenue for governments and corporations alike.

Once our movements are predictable, we will magically find convenient opportunities to engage in economic transactions (each one taxed, levied, permitted, marked-up and laden with 'fees') in front of us all the time. About to go to the store for food? They know that. Here's a coupon for the Monsanto's GM hyper-mart. About to commit a 'crime' (like THIS )? They'll show up, stop you from doing whatever you are about to do, and send you a bill. Or, if the revenue is right, they'll let you do the crime, and fulfill a private prison contract ( LINK).

Bad news.
