Thanks Shirley. :) I really would like to see a few more expressive smilies as part of the regular board... <sigh>

These are the nastiest bees around here. I was sitting on a wooden bench up on a deck and saw one and took a picture of it sitting next to me. Then I noticed there were more, and then many more ~ and no flowers nearby or any other apparent reason why there would be so many of them there and.... oh oh ha ~ assuming I was sitting over a hive, I left quietly and without any argument or objection AND without creating an unnecessary scene thus alarming others that wanted to sit near the nice nice bees (for a photo op) next . . . . ;) Anyhow, my cat started to attack this bee upon seeing it on my screen, funniest thing, she sits and watches it now waiting for it to move. I did find some really sickly looking bees too, btw.

Glad you left them alone Div. Most people don't understand that wasps also pollinate trees and flowers. They are valuable, especially in light of the shortage of bees! They aren't fun to be around as they can be agressive if one tries to swat at them, but I repeat... they are effective pollinaters!!! I hate to see the wasp traps that are sold everywhere. If there is a shortage of bees, and people trap and kill all the wasps, then we really will be in big trouble.

It's Sunday Morning.. and on "Sunday Morning" CBS' At this time will be a piece on
'All the Buzz'...
As they were announcing, they mentioned that honey bees have to travel 5500 miles and visit more than 2 million flowers? to procduce one jar of honey...
Did I hear that right?

Watch and see.

Friday, May 11th at 6:30 pm pacific time. Post your thoughts, prayers and images here - if you care to.

And every night at 6:30 pm pt...for as long as it takes.

The Honey Bees need us, and we need them.

Let us use our energy and intent to heal them, and to heal our natural world/planet Earth - Gaia, and all life and living systems inter-related here.

I came home last week to find the cherry bushes and apricot trees in full bloom. On the beautiful blossoms I saw more and healthier honeybees than I have ever seen. I have been here more than 20 years, and did have one hive. When I saw the abundance of honey bees and their vibrant well being I thought to myself my hive down by the bee pond, must be doing really well. I walked down to discover it was vacant, empty! walking back up to the trees. I looked at the bees very closely. There were very busy and happy to say healthy . This brings me to a question. The research being done on the disappearing honeybees. What is it based on? is their actual research being done? I think the bees may be going through a change. Maybe they’re just moving back to the environment they were meant to live in. Moving back to the wild. Possibly to areas where people do not use pesticides and use organic fertilizers only. Anyway happy to report honeybees are doing much, much better than I have ever seen!
Could it have been Linnea’s mind blast 5-10-07 ?

We planted some purple flowers(don't know their name) around our patio, and this year I have seen more bees than I have seen in years.

Hopefully they are coming back.
I hope I'm not too far off topic here, but I observed what looked like a hummingbird (half the size of a hummingbird) with the tale of a bee. It acted just like any hummingbird with the long narrow snout sucking nectar from the little purple flowers, you could see its wings flutter as a hummingbird's, but its tail was striped orange and black like a bee. I watched this thing for at least five minutes. Has anyone ever seen anything like this? Talk about missing a photo opportunity.

Badspell...I think what you saw was a type of moth. I heard someone talking about a certain plant that attracts moths that at first glance, look like hummingbirds. I'd never heard of them! But take a look and see what you think.

And SetisLady, I have had bumble bees flying around my holly bushes...I was SO happy to see them!

That first picture looks a lot like what I saw but the wings were moving so quickly they were almost invisible. The flower it was sucking nectar from looked exactly like the one in the first picture. You may be right. I should have taken a picture. Next time I will.. thanks for the information:)
