8-Track Tapes

The 9 bestselling 8-Track tapes of 1969
What cassettes were Americans cranking in their Thunderbirds? A whole lot of Creedence, for starters.

Fifty years ago, Ford installed the first automobile 8-track players, in its 1966 Mustang, Thunderbird and Lincoln models. The choice of models is of note, as the type of person that drove a Mustang, Thunderbird or Lincoln was more apt to collect the newfangled cassette format.

A few years later, Billboard began to chart the sales of "cartridges" — in 8-track, cassette and the now largely forgotten 4-track formats. While there are no numerical sales figures on the units shifted, one can get a good sense of what was music was more popular on these portable, plastic-encased formats. So we pored over those charts, paying particular notice to the final chart of 1969 from December 27.

The four best-selling albums overall are all represented here, but there are some outliers that allow us to get a picture of the 8-track-buying consumer.

In 1969 I had to 8 Track Tapes, Creedence and Abby Road.

I new the sequence of both tapes and could probably still recite the lyrics. (I would NEVER sing!)

I love 8 tracks... Pure analog beauty :)

I have these..

1) Woodstock 69 - 2 cartridges (I also have the records (3) and VHS tapes (2) -- VHS tapes are the BEST as far as content goes (8 track and records have the best/loudest sound)))

2) Neil Diamond - Hot august night (LIVE - 1972)
3) The Who - Whos next (I also have this record)
4) KTEL - Starflight (A collection of 16 1979 songs (2 are from 1978))
5) Yes - Fragile (I also have this record)
6) Frank Sinatra - "I've got the world on a string" (16 greatest hits)
7) GOLD SOUND - 16 hits from 1961
8 ) The greatest of Eddy Arnold (I also have the 2 records of this)
