So, Subway's struggled since going away from the $5 footlong. And it's never a plus when your long time pitchman's pinched on child sex charges. Only time will tell if their "Make It What You Want" marketing to Millennials turns things around -

Yet aside the target demo, for generating mass audience attention alone? NOTHING anyone does will ever measure up to this competitor's 2003-04 TV ad campaign! Quiznos' Spongmonkeys once seen, cannot be unseen.

WE LOVE THE SUBS

Can Plant-Based Meatballs Save Subway?

Post by Riddick » 08-09-2019 12:49 AM

Subway announced it will add a Beyond Meatball Marinara sub, in partnership with Beyond Meat, to its menu in September. The sandwich will be available at 685 locations in the US and Canada for a limited time only.

Subway has always aimed to allow their customers to build sandwiches exactly to their liking. What consumers are increasingly liking is meat alternatives. The new Beyond Meatball Marinara sub will incorporate the Beyond Meatball, created specially for Subway.

This is one of the many partnerships Subway has announced in the past few months – seemingly in an effort to come out of recent crisis. Subway is also working with King’s Hawaiian for bread and Halo Top for Subway’s first milkshake offering.

The company has been facing a decline in sales, with 25% less traffic than in 2012. Last year over 1,100 Subway locations closed in the US, making it the third year in a row in which its number of closures surpassed its openings.

The QSR’s slump since its era of Jared commercials and 5$ footlong subs can be attributed to a number of causes: over-expansion, competition, and franchisee contention, being a few possibilities. Its market, which was once mainly Subway and Quizno's, became oversaturated with like-minded competitors such as Jimmy John's, Potbelly, and Jersey Mike's.

With the introduction of the Beyond Meatball, Subway is the first QSR in the sub sandwich category to use plant-based meat. They are joining a group of several other QSRs that have recently began testing meat-alternatives — Burger King, White Castle, Carl's Jr., Del Taco, Tim Horton's, and more.
