Moon Machines (2008)

Post by SquidInk » 04-28-2014 02:07 PM

This is fascinating. It's a recounting of the Apollo program, from the point of view of the engineers who were tasked with inventing the machines.

There was a time when we could (all) come together to achieve a goal. Heck, in part one of this documentary, the engineers recount how the surfers of Seal Beach were recruited to design and implement a system of insulation for part of the space craft. The surfers had been shaping boards out of a light/sturdy honeycomb substrate. The engineers needed something similar, but didn't have the surfers' years of experience with this kind of material. All the surfers requested was the ability to leave on a moments notice when the surf was "up". That request was granted, and the project moved forward.
