I had to board my dog Thursday night; when I picked him up last night, his "report card" read, "Selective eater -- ate better when CANNED FOOD [sic] was added to his his dry food [which I had supplied]."

I have to tell you I was VERY unhappy with my supposedly A-List kennel and told them as much. "You fed him CANNED food with all this controversy going on and didn't bother to call me beforehand to ask my permission???" They gave me a can of the type of food they'd given him (Purina EN), and I am going to call Purina to see what the deal is -- and I guarantee you I will keep the label until this mess is over, if it ever is.

So if you're kenneling your dogs/cats, supply your OWN food (which I always do) -- even if it costs you more a day which always baffles me -- and DEMAND that they call you before they mix in or give your pet ANY FOOD you haven't approved beforehand.

Pet Foods NOT on recall list

http://petsitusa.com/blog/?p=210

[updated March 31, 11:09 am CST]

With the massive pet food recall that is going on, I have had people asking me what pet food is safe. At this point, feeding our pets any commercially prepared food can feel quite risky. The following companies have made statements that their food is not affected by the Menu Foods recall. Keep in mind that we are not “recommending” any of these foods. Rather, we’re compiling a list of foods that are reported safe by the manufacturers.

For those with just the business name listed, we have obtained information from their websites. We will be contacting them for further information and will update the list appropriately as soon as possible.

IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT SHARING THIS LIST: Obviously we want the word to get out to as many people as possible about what is and is NOT on the recall list. This list is meant to be shared, but rather than copying and pasting the list on other websites, please direct people to this post. That way people will have the most up-to-date version. I’d hate to remove a business name because of new findings and have that not show up on other versions of the list.

There undoubtedly are other foods that are not on the recall list. We are adding them as we find out about them and verify their status.

Please check with the manufacturer of your pet’s food…check their website or call them. Also, as more pet foods are being added to the list of recalled pet foods, it’s imperative that you continue to check the Menu Foods recall list at http://menufoods.com/recall/ And if you find out your pet has eaten any of the recalled food, call your vet immediately.

And again, as stated above, if you’d like to share this list, please direct people to this website rather than copying it. This will ensure people have the most up-to-date version.

To date, Sundlof said Friday, the FDA has received 8,800 calls reporting kidney failure in cats and dogs. However, none of these cases has been confirmed, he added.

I am furious that we would even be getting anything pet related from China. They have a HORRIBLE record regarding animals especially dogs and cats. Why would Menu Foods even be in bed with a Country that is so open about their treatment of cats and dogs. :(

HORRIBLE is right! I don't mean to threadjack, but your excellent point touches on seeing this in the larger context.

How much worse can it with what the Chinese are doing before we stop this madness? We all know about other well documented Chinese human rights abuses: Child slave labor feeding Walmart, and other pig corps, the use of dogs and cats for fur used in clothing sold in the US, executed prisoners (many Falun gong practitioners) being "parted out" to be used for organ transplants, and collagen (used in cosmetic injections) for rich Westerners.

And now this?!

This morning, after hearing about PURINA pulling some of it's dog food, I decided to see what's available re: wheat gluten on the web.

I haven't read ALL of the contents of just this sampling of articles, but these links suggest that pretty much any other country who imports this product to us has used some sort of pesticide during the growing/storing processes.

This is in just about everything we use. This is relly frightening. I am now wondering if even TOFU is safe!
====================

Wheat gluten is a high –grade protein in fine powder form extracted from a high quality of wheat flour. The drying process is carefully regulated and controlled in order to preserve its original unique characteristics such as elasticity and extensibility. Dry gluten regains its original characteristics when mixed with water ,readily forms a cohesive and elastic dough and has baking capacity . The amino acids in PROTINAX give the dough a high elasticity and toughness. The smell and taste of protinax is almost neutral ,the color is natural creamy and it has a high waterbinding capacity

Typical uses:

Protinax vital wheat gluten can be applied:

As protein source and binder in pet food & fish food
In vegetarian meat replacing products
For special bread – and bakery products in which the protein contents need to be higher .An addition of 2-5% to the flour will give a better texture and crumb strength, a superior loaf quality, a bigger volume and improved keeping and eating qualities to the bread.
In breakfast foods which should be rich in proteins like gluten bread or biscuits
As exchangers of meat protein
For vegetable proteins and hydrolizates
In breakfasts cereals
In snacks like spring roll
In soups & sauces
In dough products
As exchangers for milk protein e.g. in cheese products
In protein foam products Process

Don't click the link above if you don't think you can handle seeing their sweet faces. It made me cry. I'm crying right now. But for me, focusing on each face was a help, a way of honoring their lives and the love, comfort, and companionship they gave to those who loved them.

Bless their sweet souls. Such a needless loss of such innocents. :(
