SE WI Suburbia Shaken, Shocked By Horrific Pre-Teen Stabbing

Post by Riddick » 06-04-2014 01:40 PM

Excerpts from some local media reports on a national news story unfolding right in my neck of the woods...

12-year-old stabbing victim’s condition upgraded to fair
  • The condition of a 12-year-old Waukesha girl gravely injured in a stabbing Saturday has been upgraded to fair, a spokeswoman for Waukesha Memorial Hospital said Wednesday.

Her condition had previously been described as critical but stable.

Authorities say two of the girl's Horning Middle School classmates stabbed her repeatedly in a plot to kill her in the works for months.

Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier have been charged with first-degree attempted homicide in the case and are being held in a secure detention facility in West Bend.

Authorities have not released the identity of the victim.

Both suspects explained the stabbing to police referencing their dedication to Slender Man, the character they discovered on a website called Creepypasta Wiki, which is devoted to horror stories.
More questions than answers after fantasy-driven stabbing
  • Forensic psychologists who specialize in juvenile crimes say as the investigation continues, additional information will likely surface that could help further explain the motivations behind the stabbing. And that information could likely extend far beyond the girls' obsession with Slender Man, as described in the criminal complaint.

Robert Kinscherff, senior associate at the National Center for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice, said that in the few similar cases that exist historically worldwide, the suspects' relationship with each other was a key component.

"When you think back to being 12 or 13, relationships are intense," Kinscherff said.

And it's that intensity, developed in isolation — and without oversight or moderation — that in rare cases may lead to extreme behaviors. The children feed off each other's thoughts and reaffirm each other's increasingly unrealistic appraisal of the world.
Slender Man evolves from joke to phenomenon
  • The concept of a dark, mysterious creature with psychologically malevolent intentions — who might seek to harm children — is common in folklore throughout the ages.

But today's Slender Man started as a few photoshopped images on a website in 2009. Then, like many things shared collectively online, it grew a life of its own.
    ...
Slender Man's creator is Eric Knudsen, 33, who is married and living in Florida, according to public records.

A working phone number to reach him could not be found Tuesday, but Knudsen said in an interview with On the Media in January that he has a toddler and was looking to become a schoolteacher. Knudsen confirmed he posted altered photos with a shadowy, slender man in the background at the website somethingawful.com in late 2009. Knudsen posted under the name Victor Surge.

"Some people had joked in the thread that oh, wouldn't it be funny if some of these ended up on paranormal websites," Knudsen said in the interview.

He acknowledged that certain people don't want to believe that Slender Man is fiction.

"Because it's obviously much scarier that way. If it's something that is real or could be real, that's much more frightening," he said in the interview.

This has nothing to do with cartoon characters etc. These kids have a lot more going on. One is a leader and the other is a follower and both are very ill. A perfect storm. Thank heavens the victim will live.

This whole dark-imagery that the young have been experimenting with the past few years is getting way out of control. Kids are very impressionable and malleable. Unfortunately, the (alleged) adults who create this crap and feed into the storylines that kids can freely access are quick to back off after tragedy occurs claiming "It's only a harmless story...". Problem is, unlike folklore where, in centuries past, when people would, infrequently gather to share stories (compared to today's 24/7 internet connected society), people didn't have all this spare time to just soak-up the crap being served to kids today. If, as you noted RA, that these kids have issues (and they most probably do..), then this crap just pushes them over the edge. Just look at what kids are increasingly being served-up as "normal entertainment" nowadays with Gothic overtones, vampirism, demonism, etc. This is the "new normal"........
There you go man, keep as cool as you can. Face piles and piles of trials with smiles. It riles them to believe that you perceive the web they weave. And keep on thinking free. (Moody Blues)

Very weird, and seems like a good way to find suggestible kids... see who responds to the meme, and approach for later indoctrination.

Jury Accepts Insanity Defense In Slender Man Case

Post by Riddick » 09-17-2017 04:50 PM

A Waukesha girl who admitted to participating in the stabbing of a classmate to please horror character Slender Man will avoid prison after a jury determined Friday that she was mentally ill at the time of the attack.

Anissa Weier's defense attorney said Weier cried in relief at verdict finding her not guilty by mental disease or defect.

Weier and Morgan Geyser lured classmate Payton Leutner into the woods at a park in Waukesha, in 2014. Geyser stabbed Leutner 19 times while Weier urged her on, according to investigators. A passing bicyclist found Leutner, who barely survived her wounds. All three girls were 12 at the time.

Weier, now 15, pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree intentional homicide in a deal with prosecutors in August. But she claims she was mentally ill during the attack and not responsible for her actions, in a bid to be sent to a mental institution rather than prison. A plea agreement before trial called for her to spend at least three years in a mental hospital if judged mentally ill, and 10 years in prison if not.  :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

The jury's verdict came after some 11 hours of deliberations, and about an hour after it had appeared to reach a verdict in Weier's favor only to see it rejected by Judge Michael Bohren.

Wisconsin law requires only 10 of 12 jurors to render a verdict on whether a criminal defendant wasn't responsible for her actions due to a mental condition.

Though that first verdict wasn't read in court, defense attorney Maura McMahon said 10 of 12 jurors -- the minimum required by law -- voted Weier was mentally ill. On a second question that jurors had to decide -- whether she was criminally responsible for her actions -- 10 jurors also voted she was not.

But it wasn't the same 10 on both questions, according to McMahon. Bohren ordered the jury to resume deliberations.

Geyser has pleaded not guilty to one count of attempted first-degree intentional homicide by reason of mental disease or defect. Her trial is set to begin Oct. 9.

Prosecuters Concede Geyser's Insanity Plea In Slender Man Case

Post by Riddick » 10-04-2017 12:01 PM

Prosecutors in the Slender Man stabbing have reached a plea agreement that will avoid a trial for the second girl charged in the case.

Morgan Geyser, 15, was scheduled to go before a jury next month, but will instead plead guilty as charged but not be held criminally liable and remain at the state mental hospital where she has been getting treatment for about 18 months.

The deal essentially will end the three-year-old case that has made news nationally.

The resolution, revealed at a status hearing Friday, was not unexpected. On Sept. 15, a jury found Geyser’s co-defendant, Anissa Weier, not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, and she was not as clearly ill as Geyser.

In exchange for her guilty plea to the attempted first-degree intentional homicide, prosecutors dropped an enhancer for use of a dangerous weapon, which cuts five years from her potential maximum commitment, and will agree that she meets the standard for being found not guilty by mental disease.

Three psychologists, two of them appointed by the court, all agreed Weier came to share a delusion with Geyser that Slender Man, an internet character, would kill them or their families if they didn’t carry out their plot to kill their sixth-grade classmate.

The girls were 12 at the time but charged as adults, as required under Wisconsin law because of the severity of the crime — attempted first-degree intentional homicide. During early evaluations of the girls' legal competency to understand the charges and aid in their defense, Geyser was diagnosed with early-onset schizophrenia.

Despite her diagnosis, Geyser wasn't treated for more than a year until she was committed under a separate civil procedure before a different judge.

At the time, Geyser’s attorney suggested that the only plea that made sense for his client would be one that included a stipulation that her mental condition at the time prevented her from being found criminally responsible.

Without the plea deal, Geyser could have forced prosecutors to prove the facts of the case. That could have led to testimony by the victim, Payton Leutner, or at least the playing of her recorded interview with police days after she had survived multiple surgeries for the 19 stab wounds suffered in the May 31, 2014, attack in woods near a Waukesha park.

And at a penalty phase, Geyser's attorneys would have introduced evidence that before she began treatment, she told doctors she still had conversations with characters from the Harry Potter stories, could exercise Vulcan mind control and couldn’t guarantee she wouldn’t follow more Slender Man commands.

Jurors may also have heard that at a West Bend juvenile jail she ate under a table and played with ants. On the recording of her interrogation the day of her arrest, Geyser stared into space, sang and sat with her feet up on the chair, exhibiting no sense of emotion as she discussed the day's events.

Since moving to Winnebago Mental Health Institute in Oshkosh, Geyser has begun medication and therapy her lawyer has said successfully ended her hallucinations.
