$600 Billion/Year Spent, Yet Large Majority of H.S. Seniors Not College-Ready

Post by Riddick » 04-30-2016 01:11 AM

According to the latest results of the 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as “the nation’s report card”, just 25 percent of U.S. 12th graders tested “Proficient” or above in math, down slightly from the 26 percent reported in 2013.

That means that three-quarters of the nation’s soon-to-be-graduating high school seniors are not prepared to succeed in college math courses.

Although more 12th graders (37 percent) tested “Proficient” or above in reading, that figure was also down one percent from the 2013 results.

According to NAEP, nearly two-thirds of high seniors do not have the written language skills they will need in college.

All this despite, according to the latest available figures from NCES, “the 50 states & D.C. reported $603.7 billion in funding collected for public elementary and secondary education in 2013.”.

When kids can't make change, know how tax works, or know the basics of civics, you KNOW we're screwed.

Yet, here in Oregon we spend $10 to 12 thousand on each child, per school year (9 months). We have new schools popping up, in a dying community. And if you want to check, educationally the state ranks darn near last, of the 50 states. Seem to be more involved in gender idenity of which our state happly pays for (tax payers) sex reassignment, steroids & surgurys at the age of 15, without parential consent. But cannot read or write.

Sounds like a bad"Conspiracy Theory" but true.

In Ohio, the system has been to teach to the test, and what has been coming out is a lot of kids that know how to ace the state exams, but can't tell you sh-- about anything else. They don't know where Ontario or Washington DC is at. They can't make change. They don't even have a clue if you're BSing them. You can say "The Constitution says we all get free TVs" and they believe it. The teachers union in Ohio is perhaps the most corrupt, just behind is the governor. Gee, I wonder who that might be?

As I've railed about in other posts, at some point we need to clean the fed and state offices out and get back to basics.

John B Wells had a great show featuring Charlotte Iserbyt that was a real eye-opener for me about the agenda to dumb-down education in this country

Locally, here in Massachusetts, we keep hearing about "net school spending" which, to me, means "legalized extortion by the local school departments". On an annual basis, the local taxpayers are being told that "as required by law", taxpayers must pony-up so many millions of dollars to support the local schools. Yet, when you see the results, yu have to wonder why we need to continue to pay for this - sure, there are many brand-new buildings that are al linked into the internet, but the kids still come out knowing crap.......

One of the TED talks I saw recently dealt with the issue of education and our social environment, and it pointed to several factors.
  • The subtle changing of historical record.
  • Promotion of a state which is all things to all people.
  • Dependence on government.
  • Creating victims.
  • Promotion of misdirected resolution.
Of these, the last to me was the biggest point. We've evolved into blaming everyone except those who are guilty, and we're drawn to bitching and moaning on social media and forums rather than taking the fight right to our reps. As the speaker put it "You see thousands of tweets. Imagine the change if thousands showed up at their congressman's door angry. As long as they can drive you to bitch in another place, the heat is off them."

Tweeting is easier and places far less demands on the participants

Write your rep, let 'em know. What a concept!

Funny they don't already know though. Really, how impenetrable IS the bubble they live in

Still, some public education racket in this country, eh?

Like we have to pay to protect kids from stupidity

Yet the dumber they get.

And the educators' answer to that is what?

Fork over even more dough

Right. 'Cause that's what you always do when someone's not doing their job

That kinda works right in with the Congress critters...

Forgetting for a moment all of the social programs that are suddenly necessary. Can neither read, nor write? Can't get a decent job, either......... Can't support a family, health suffers, etc - Just LOOK at all the social programs necessary that are now needed - so, the poor track record of the Education Dept actually, in some warped, reverse logic, creates jobs for social workers, drug counselors and police since they are the areas occupationally most affected.......
