From The Land of "You Can't Make This Crap Up"

Post by kbot » 09-25-2017 02:19 PM

So, a lot has been made over Colin Kaepernick's "taking a knee" and expanding that top the rest of the NFL and sports in general. All was going well in a coordinated plan by the NFL to sanitize the situation until one Army vet decided to let his actions speak for themselves.

Shameful country we live in.........

Wow: Steelers Coach Annoyed That Decorated Army Veteran Left Team to Stand for Anthem

Yesterday we told you about offensive lineman Alejandro Villanueva's decision to leave the Pittsburgh Steelers' locker room in Chicago in order to stand, hand on heart, for the national anthem. Villanueva is a decorated ex-Army Ranger who served three tours in Afghanistan, earning a Bronze Star for his valorous service. With an emotional national debate swirling, his team had collectively decided not to enter the field of play until after the anthem was over, a move that head coach Mike Tomlin framed as an effort to side-step the politically-fraught controversy. But Villanueva elected not to go along with that plan. He walked down the tunnel and paid homage to the flag and anthem, all by himself. In a post-game press conference after the Steelers lost to the Bears, Tomlin sounded unhappy with his offensive lineman

With all this controversy in the NFL, curiously enough attendance at the local tavern where I've watched Packers games from time to time was drastically off yesterday

Coincidence? IMHO, with a fraction of the usual crowd, something's going on and it's not because the Packers are playing badly.

Might be than fans are fed-up with highly paid athletes dictating to the fans (essentially, their employers without financial support they wouldn't even have a job) how they should feel. Granted, this is from Baltimore, but speaks to the point.....

Fans burn up talk radio and social media in response to NFL player protests

Some Ravens fans said Monday they were selling game tickets and burning jerseys to protest the protests — players who knelt during the national anthem before NFL games on Sundays — even as others happily offered to take them off their hands.

In an unprecedented form of Monday morning quarterbacking, fans took to call-in radio and social media to vent not so much on the game itself but on the players’ protests — and whether that made them want to boycott or support them.

President Trump, who ignited the controversy by denouncing the kneeling players and calling for their firing, continued his campaign with even more tweets on Monday.

"I want to go to the game but the NFL has soured this,” said longtime Ravens fan Sean Maloney, 60, of Salisbury, who has tickets to this Sunday’s Ravens gain against their archrivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Have We Reached A Point In America That Even A Sporting Event Has To Be Politicized?

Post by Riddick » 09-26-2017 03:49 PM

We are bombarded with news reports, news flashes, news alerts, fake news, twenty-four hours a day, and in this age of commentators, talking heads and guests seeking to sway opinions one way or another, we face constant sensory overload, constantly broadsided by not just the news but the dissection, coloring and spinning of the facts.

Can we not even watch a sports event, which used to be sacrosanct territory where we could escape the ever-present political blabber and enjoy a couple of hours of excitement and entertainment?

if the NFL player protests are meant to garner support for the causes they espouse, they seem to have the opposite effect as the latest polls show most of the American public are not happy with players kneeling or sitting during “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

I consider myself a dyed in the wool football fan. I watch the college games on Saturday and dive into my Sunday Ticket channels on Sunday, and work time allowing, watch Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football, Thursday Night Football and am chomping at the bit by the time the weekend rolls around again.

But, even a football junkie like me has to wonder if the NFL has reached a tipping point, an over saturation, such a ready availability that any novel appeal has been rubbed off and that the broadcaster’s foray into political and social comment is an irritating pill to swallow.

8) That was a fitting sign you saw Riddick!

kbot, The entertainment value of the game is out the window and it's going to slam shut.

Cahokia, Illinois: third grade footballers took to their knees during the National Anthem last week and for two nights radio host Mike Gallagher was livid on the air!

 Kaperneck shot himself in the foot in 2016 and it seems he had plenty of bullets to go around for the NFL in 2017.

This was my Tweet this past weekend on a game day's pic with more empty seats than occupiers!

Think about it. Someday every multi million dollar football stadium could be a farmer's corn field, again!

The NFL's CEO Goodell (sp?) should be fired :P

Tammy Bruce: Liberal Media Pathologically Fixated On Anti-Trump Hatred

Post by Riddick » 09-27-2017 10:10 AM

The left works overtime to control everyone’s sense of reality. They have lost the hearts and minds of Americans so all they can do now is arrange various public Kabuki dramas insisting that America (and Americans by default) are no good and not worth standing for.

For a media that remain pathologically fixated on their hatred for the president, having to cover other news is anathema to them. Who knows, events they could cover might help President Trump; or if they stop attacking him for a few days people might have a moment to consider the president without him being slathered in media crazy sauce.

So, as Mr. Trump received praise for guiding the nation through hurricanes, which played a part in his approval ratings rise, it’s no surprise the left lurched forward and decided more racial division and complaining about America were necessary.

“Taking a knee” has become the new “Hands up, don’t shoot” scenario for liberal activists. As their hero Hillary Clinton wanders around the country continuing her “Tour J’accuse,” major league football players decided to kneel (again) during Sunday’s football games.

Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of the “protest,” the fact of the matter is, it wasn’t much of a protest at all. The Daily Caller reports only 12 percent of NFL players sat or kneeled during the anthem. That’s the story, but one you won’t hear from the legacy media.

A scramble to smear the president is all this is. They choose to cover the contrived NFL protest about inequality, but where are they covering another weekend of bloodshed in Chicago? Forty people were shot this past weekend in Chicago, with 12 fatalities.

The media always ignore the river of blood that engulfs Chicago, because looking at it does not advance the liberal agenda. Like other facts of urban life, it indicts liberalism for dooming those under its bloody boot.

Then there was a mass shooting at a Christian church in Antioch, Tennessee. The horror happened on Sunday. The media hasn’t really been interested in the murdered woman and seven seriously injured because they had their multimillionaire football players kneeling and complaining about Mr. Trump.

You know, there’s only so much room in a reporter’s head, right?

But there is another problem with the Antioch church shooting, as with the constant massacres in Chicago: The facts in Antioch aren’t the right kind of facts that benefit the liberal agenda, so down the memory hole it goes.

The shooter is Emanuel Kidega Samson, originally described by police as African-American, but is an immigrant from the Sudan. During the shooting, he was tackled and stopped by Robert Engle, a heroic church usher. Mr. Engle then retrieved his own legally owned firearm and held the attempted mass murderer at bay until the police arrived.

For the left and the legacy media the optics of this are just bad, bad, bad. A Sudanese migrant, stopped by a man with a concealed carry permit. While all the victims appear to be white, it’s unclear what element of the crime has compelled the Department of Justice to open a civil rights investigation into the shooting.

For one moment the media did turn their heads, when they thought they could construct Mr. Trump’s Katrina: Puerto Rico!

Various reporters and celebrities were shocked, just shocked when they imagined Mr. Trump had totally forgotten about the crisis in hurricane ravaged Puerto Rico. After all, the president was only tweeting about the kneeling controversy. His lack of tweets about Puerto Rico proved he had completely forgotten about them! Viola, Mr. Trump’s Katrina!

Yeah, no. Mr. Trump doesn’t govern via Twitter, even though the social media platform appears to be the only connection to reality for legacy media and Hollywood.

The military, Coast Guard and National Guard were all dispatched and working on the island. Stars and Stripes reported on the multiple missions being conducted by the military for both Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Ranging from search and rescue, to constructing communications centers, clearance operations, medical rescue, the distribution of water and goods across the islands, the federal response has been praised by Puerto Rican officials, including Gov. Ricardo Rossello.

These serious, existential events were ignored or lied about by the legacy media. People say Mr. Trump will “win” any fight with the NFL, and that the kneeling controversy will backfire. No doubt the free market will send a message of rejection to the NFL. But there’s another loser in the chaotic contrivances of the left — the media and their complete loss of any objectivity and interest in actual news.

Riddick, from the article you'd posted:

"In a ceremony that many times involves a military color guard, a flyover or some other symbol of our military, disrespecting the flag, the banner they fought under and the anthem that was played when they were sent off to war, cuts deep in the veteran population.

The players may say they mean no disrespect to veterans, but many veterans are not taking it that way at all. A short hop through the internet could bear me out.

And if the protests are meant to garner support for the causes they espouse, they seem to have the opposite effect as the latest polls show and that most of the American public are not happy with the players kneeling or sitting during “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

I don't believe that we've seen the end of this. On the one hand, you could say, with surety, that "it only a game....." and be absolutely correct. On a certain level you have to wonder about the depth of concern by what are, by all accounts, multimillionaires, playing a game for teams who's owners are billionaires.

Even then, you have to wonder (at some point) how does one go in a straight line from "protesting" how cops treat certain groups to pissing off vets. This may not have been the INTENT of those protesting by (to use one of their own phrase) "disrespecting" the flag and all military symbolism. The overwhelming majority of these athletes have never served in he military and with many weighing well north of 300 lbs wouldn't qualify to anyway.

You'd think that with the free education they received as compensation for (again) playing a friggin' game in college, that they'd have learned that pissing off vets isn't a smart move as they will petition to have the military removed from sponsorship of the NFL and then target companies that buy ad time. The protestors want the country to develop a sense of empathy, yet they fail to look for quality in themselves. A few millions vets will most probably have more of an impact on the NFLs bottom line than the protestors will......

Like I said.........

Negative reaction to protests leads Ravens' anthem singer to resign

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens national anthem singer Joey Odoms resigned Tuesday at a time when protests during the song have generated strong emotions across the country.

"The tone/actions of a large number of NFL fans in the midst of our country's cultural crisis have convinced me that I do not belong there," Odoms wrote on Facebook. "Someone once told me to always 'go where you're welcomed.'"

Odoms, who is African-American, is a member of the Maryland National Guard. When he was a soldier in Afghanistan, Odoms met John Harbaugh and informed the Ravens coach that he wanted to be the team's next national anthem singer.

Odoms' decision comes two days after 13 Ravens players took a knee during the national anthem for the first time. This generated intense and mixed responses from the team's fan base. Some have threatened to sell their tickets and burn Ravens jerseys. Others have supported the players' right to protest.

A Ravens spokesman confirmed that Odoms had informed the team he was stepping down after being the primary national anthem singer at M&T Bank Stadium for the past three seasons.

"We greatly appreciate the work Joey did for us, and we thank him," the team said in a statement.

The Ravens need to find a new singer for Sunday, when the team plays host to the AFC North rival Pittsburgh Steelers.

"This is not an emotional reaction to recent events, rather an ethical decision that part of me regrets but my core knows is the right choice," Odoms posted on Facebook. "Thank you so much for the opportunity to grow as a performer and for allowing me to live out a dream of sharing my gift with you."

My personal view is that, most people attend sporting events (or any form of entertainment for that matter) to escape reality. The last thing that want is a full frontal in your face version of what they're trying to get away from. The opposite argument is that the fans are a captive audience, so take advantage of the situation to show your displeasure with (fill-in-the-blank).

The NFL - and also college, high school and Pop Warner football will be on the way out with the recent revelation of CTE:

Snippet:
In July, Boston University researchers found CTE present in 110 of 111 brains from former NFL players that were donated for research after their deaths.

"A high level of play may be related to substantial disease burden," the authors said.

The most common cause of death among those with early-stage CTE was suicide, they found, which accounted for more than a quarter of deaths.

High-profile suicides include former Chicago Bears player Dave Duerson, who shot himself in the chest in 2011 and left a note saying he wanted his brain to be examined by scientists.

Duerson, who had been suffering from depression, was later found to have CTE.

Who else is affected?

Last year former BMX champion Dave Mirra became the first action sports athlete to be diagnosed with CTE after he committed suicide.

He had been suffering mood swings, Rolling Stone reported.

The magazine said that towards the end of his career, Mirra had begun having more frequent crashes because pressure had grown within the sport to aim for bigger jumps and more difficult tricks.

Meanwhile former WWE wrestling champion Daniel Bryan last year said he was retiring because a brain scan had revealed that his brain was not "as OK as I thought it was".
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-41360151

Was listening to a show on a local sports station yesterday heading home from work, and an angle being taken was that the Patriots (or NFL) could (and may) take the position that while Hernandez played for the Pats for four years, prior to that he played college in Florida, and before that played high school football in Connecticut - and probably even younger than that. The NFL may argue and accept liability - up to one-third of the judgment. For the other two-thirds, look to the colleges, high school and local kids teams for compensation. This would completely "bankrupt the system". The wisdom of this can be debated.

For example, a lawyer could make a claim that "You hit your head over and over and over. You NEVER thought you'd have an injury?" or, "Your parents exposed you to this while you were young. Don't THEY bear some responsibility?"

Also, adults know going into a profession that their work entails some risk. I and others like me get higher doses of radiation than everyone else. So, there is the statistical possibility that as a group we will have higher rates of various types of cancers such as lymphoma and unless we exercise care, our kid's DNA could be scrambled for a few generations down the line. In any type of work, and adult evaluates risks and benefits

Granted, NOW we know about CTE. Armed wit that, some people (and organizations) will evaluate risks. Can high schools become a target in a lawsuit for CTE down the line? or a college/ university. many schools and their lawyers may decide that the risk is not worth it, monetarily, and drop these programs.

THAT would be worse for the NFL than any protests.......

How can millions of vets stay pissed off when they see this wonderful wardrobe deal?

John Kass: NFL Jackets For Veterans Day, Kneepads Not Included

Go to NFLshop.com — the online store for the No Fan League — type the words "Veterans Day" into the search box, and you'll find a nice jacket to honor veterans.

It's only $78.99 and commemorates Veterans Day, the national holiday in November established to honor all military veterans.

"Men's Pittsburgh Steelers Nike Black Salute to Service Hybrid Performance Jacket" is how the one I looked at is described, although similar jackets are available with the logos of all the NFL teams.

But there's something every culture warrior in the NFL's Virtue Signaling Bowl should know about the league's "Salute to Service" jacket: Kneepads aren't included.

So if you wish to kneel, say, like some real NFL player during the national anthem on Veterans Day and pretend you're actually respecting the flag, the anthem and veterans, then I can't really help you. You're on your own.

But then, aren't we all, with this one? Read Full Column
