Venezuela's middle class feels the squeeze

Post by Linnea » 11-29-2006 05:41 PM

"I don't want my children to grow up in the kind of country that [President Hugo] Chavez is creating," is a sentiment often expressed by members of Venezuela's middle classes as the presidential poll approaches.

It is one that has led tens of thousands of Venezuelans to emigrate.

But others are determined to stay put and resist the president who they fear will turn their country into an oil-rich version of Cuba.

While the poor and the rich - particularly, a new elite linked to the government - are widely seen to have benefited from the current administration and the oil bonanza, the middle classes have felt excluded and harassed.

.................................

Political analyst Alberto Garrido says that until Mr Chavez's 1998 election, the middle classes had been gaining ground in political spheres, mostly because of increased access to university education.

.....................

One middle class man who is determined to stay and fight for change is Arturo Merizalde, a doctor who says he had to close down his surgery in a lower-middle class area of the capital after government policies left most of his patients jobless.

I have always been a left-wing person. I supported Chavez the first year, but then it became indefensible," he says. "He is not a leftist - he is a fascist."

Please, give me a moment to compose myself! I need to get a hankie so that I can sob my eyes out over the perilous plight of the mainstream bourgeoisie…

“Time for a God damn history lesson,” he screamed in the classroom, as he smashed the pointer in his hand down onto the desk with tremendous force while flames darted from his eyes.

Before the 16th century in Western Europe, the very concept of a mainstream bourgeoisie was absolutely incomprehensible in human history. Before the 17th century in Holland, there were no real mainstream bourgeois people. Before the middle of the 19th century, there was no large mainstream bourgeois class in England and --- get ready for a shock, here! --- before the end of World War I (just three generations ago), there was no large mainstream bourgeois class in Amerika either! Spare me your squeals of protest and denial: these are the facts.

All over the world, the mainstream bourgeoisie is being liquidated: yes, this appears to be the case even in Germany, one of the wisest nations in the world, with a wisdom purchased at a truly hideous price. The mainstream bourgeoisie was nothing more --- never could have been anything more --- than a bunch of bubbles resting upon the crest of a rising rise of capitalist-driven socio-economic production. Well, folks, the wave done crested, and now we are seeing the mainstream bourgeoisie, the famous mainstream bourgeoisie, being revealed as the derivative socio-economic phenomenon that it always was and ever must be. So the shark-skin-suited guys and their blue-haired wives are fleeing Venezuela, huh? Well, they are in for one hell of shock if and when they arrive in the land where the streets are paved in gold! Oh boy, what a shock are they in for!

But can I weep for their impending demise? What do we owe the mainstream bourgeoisie? What have they ever done for any society of which they have been members? Nothing, except consume like termites and excrete children to continue the process like army ants. The entire consciousness of a mainstream bourgeois person is reactionary, and all that the regular guys and the soccer moms ever want to do is to make sure that tomorrow is just like the day before yesterday. Their ultimate horror is that somebody is going to grab their hand and notice the grains of dirt under their fingernails, dirt that they inherited from their proletarian parents or grandparents or great-grandparents. Heaven forbid that anybody should think that they have to use air freshener in the bathroom! Heaven forbid! In the meantime, they consume, they excrete, they take up space --- and they destroy every single damn thing that they touch! They disgust me --- and not just me. Oh no, not by a long shot!

God bless Hugo Chavez, who did a first-rate Jim Webb on Dubya last fall right at the podium of the United Nations and in the pulpit of the Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Harlem! God bless Hugo Chavez, who is going to save thousands of poor and elderly Bostonians from freezing to death this winter in the land of milk and honey! God bless Hugo Chavez, who is working with Russia and Iran to combat the depravity of the fascist Amerikan Empire! God bless him!

In A Hungry Venezuela, Buying Too Much Food Can Get You Arrested

Post by Riddick » 09-15-2016 12:06 PM

In a new crackdown, Venezuelan supermarket shoppers waiting in long lines are being subjected to seemingly random raids and arrests in the early morning darkness by truckloads of troops, as President Nicolás Maduro asserts greater control over food distribution and consumption. Maduro blames this oil-rich country’s chronic scarcities on an “economic war” against his government waged by foreign enemies, opposition leaders, business owners and smuggling gangs. FULL STORY

At A Loss For Meds, Venezuela’s Mentally Ill Spiral Downward

Post by Riddick » 10-02-2016 01:42 AM

Venezuela’s economic collapse has already decimated its health system, leaving hospitals without antibiotics, surgeons without gloves and patients dying on emergency room tables.

Now, thousands of mental health patients — many of whom had been living relatively normal lives under medication — are drifting into despair and psychosis because the country has run out of the vast majority of psychiatric medicines, leaving families and doctors powerless to help them, medical experts say.

Hobbled by such shortages, Venezuela’s mental institutions now care for only a small portion of the patients they did a few years ago. In 2013, there were 23,630 long-term psychiatric patients in public hospitals, but only 5,558 last year, according to a report from the Health Ministry.

Publicly, the Venezuelan government denies that its hospitals are suffering, and has refused multiple offers of international medical aid. FULL STORY

 Shame on that oil rich South American country! On The Drudge Report this week and this evening it's reported that school kids are fainting of hunger at their desks! Then lastly tonight, but not last by a long shot, livestock trucks are being stopped and robbed of their live freight!

We hope in the future that American's never have to ask once again in real earnest, "Where's our John Wayne now?" Because today the beleaguered and hungry Venezuelan's maybe asking, "Where's our Mel Gibson* now?"

The US news today always has their priorities mixed up! :P

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/tom-blu ... visibility

"At 10 p.m. Friday evening, the Associated Press had no story in its "World Top 10" about developments in that country. The AP broke the ice sometime Saturday morning. As of 8:26 a.m. Eastern Time (as saved here), its story about the country was ninth on the list, below one concerning the Nobel Prize committee's inability to contact literature prize winner Bob Dylan."

If living there can get worse for the Venezuelans it most surely will get worse under any new dictatorship! :( Just like what happened badly with the last dictatorship!

Venezuela Is Down To Its Last $10 Billion

Post by Riddick » 03-02-2017 01:10 AM

Caracas is running out of cash.

In 2011, Venezuela had roughly $30 billion in reserves. In 2015, it had $20 billion.

According to its most recent central bank data, it has $10.5 billion in foreign reserves left. The trend can't persist much longer, but it's hard to know exactly when Venezuela will run completely out of cash.

According to the country's recently released 2016 financial report, about $7.7 billion of its remaining $10.5 billion of reserves is in gold. To make debt payments in the past year, Venezuela shipped gold to Switzerland.

For rest of the year, Venezuela owes roughly $7.2 billion in outstanding debt payments.

The thinning reserves paint a scary financial picture as the country faces a humanitarian crisis sparked by an economic meltdown. Venezuelans are suffering massive food and medical shortages, as well as skyrocketing grocery prices. FULL STORY

Venezuela’s Supreme Court Seizes Power From Parliament

Post by Riddick » 03-31-2017 08:32 PM

Venezuela lurched deeper into crisis Thursday after the government-controlled supreme court stripped the elected legislature of its lawmaking powers, prompting the head of the Organization of American States (OAS) to decry a “self-inflicted coup” and describe Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s Socialist regime as a “dictatorship.”

“We have an obligation to the people of Venezuela to act without further delay,” said Luis Almagro after the court action. “To be silent in the face of a dictatorship is the lowest indignity in politics.”

“Venezuela’s top court takes actions to preserve rule of law,” was the AVN state news agency’s portrayal of the move by the Tribunal Supremo de Justicia, which declared the National Assembly to be in contempt of its rulings.

It was the latest in a long series of government actions designed to counter the opposition, whose December 2015 parliamentary election victory ended 16 years of National Assembly control by the socialist ruling party of Maduro and his late predecessor, the U.S.-baiting populist Hugo Chavez.

An attempt last year to hold a recall referendum against Maduro was blocked when the national electoral council, controlled by loyalists of the president, cancelled the process, alleging fraud.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner on Thursday called the court ruling a “rupture of democratic and constitutional norms” and “a serious setback for democracy in Venezuela.”

Venezuela Is Starving

Post by Riddick » 05-06-2017 01:04 AM

Once South America’s richest country, Venezuela implemented a socialist agenda.

Now people are starving to death.

Venezuela’s inflation, estimated by the International Monetary Fund to reach 720% in 2017, is the highest in the world. The economy has shrunk 27% since 2013, according to local investment bank Torino Capital; imports of food have plummeted 70%.

Huge numbers of Venezuelans are bringing their children as they rummage through garbage for food; farm crops are routinely stolen; groceries are looted. As The Wall Street Journal notes, things have become so dire that families padlock their refrigerators.

According to the National Poll of Living Conditions, 75% of Venezuelans said they had lost an average of 19 pounds last year. As a result, riots have erupted; by last Friday, more than 35 people had been reported killed.

Livia Machado, a physician and child malnutrition expert, said there has been a marked upswing in emaciated infants brought to the Domingo Luciani Hospital in Caracas. A recent study from the Catholic charity Caritas of 800 children under the age of 5 in Yare and three other communities showed that in February nearly 11% could die from severe acute malnutrition.

Meanwhile, government officials will not permit food and aid to be imported. 90% of homes in the country could not afford food to feed their residents. FULL STORY
