Brilliant. Enchanting. Moving. Well done, Canada!
I believe we have much to learn of what is really important and enduring about our very human selves, in relation to each other on this blue planet - from our neighbors to the north.
Was especially moved by K.D Lang's rendition of Hallelujah. Unforgettable performance.
As for the four pillars of the indoor torch - the tripod is the more symbolic and stable form. Providence, maybe?
My only gripe was not being able to see the opening ceremony in 'live time'. NBC did not broadcast it here until 9 PM.

Bobbi Snow wrote: It's SAD that the last pillar wouldn't deploy, but it was so much less intimidating than the Chinese opening ceremonies. It was entertaining, sweet, and so much more enjoyable, even though the Chinese one was spectacular. I LOVED it.
If that pillar malfuction happened in the previous summer Olympics. Some guy would be taking a dip in the Pacific.
You know you watch too much Colbert Report when you see the giant polar bear come out and the first thing you think about is "Oh no Colbert must be freaking out"
I'm a little surpried they didn't just let the West Coast see it live. But I'm guessing the organizers would have liked it to be taped delayed for everybody and fast forward the awkward pausing during the pillar raise.
Well, it was a Polar Bear. It was white and had the head shape of the Polar Bear. So, I am told on the homefront here.
Makes sense as well, as Grizzlies hibernate during the winter months.
Some are saying it was a Black Bear - just discovered - on a blog from Vancouver/ via NY Times?, I think:

There is supposed to be a discussion somewhere in these blog postings...
