Why is it that only Fox seems to make these slip ups?

ahh yeah... exactly...

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archiv ... 029221.php

IF CANTOR REALLY WANTS TO GO THERE.... House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), shortly after President Obama's remarks on Osama bin Laden, issued a related statement. It included this gem:
"I commend President Obama who has followed the vigilance of President Bush in bringing Bin Laden to justice."
There's a fair amount of this rhetoric bouncing around this morning, and it's not especially surprising -- Republicans aren't going to credit President Obama, regardless of merit, so it stands to reason they'll try to bring George W. Bush into the picture.

If this is going to be a new GOP talking point, we might as well set the record straight.

In March 2002, just a year and a half after 9/11, Bush said of bin Laden, "I truly am not that concerned about him.... You know, I just don't spend that much time on him, to be honest with you."

In July 2006, we learned that the Bush administration closed its unit that had been hunting bin Laden.

In September 2006, Bush told Fred Barnes, one of his most sycophantic media allies, that an "emphasis on bin Laden doesn't fit with the administration's strategy for combating terrorism."

And don't even get me started on Bush's failed strategy that allowed bin Laden to escape from Tora Bora.

I'm happy to extend plenty of credit to all kinds of officials throughout the government, but crediting Bush's "vigilance" on bin Laden is deeply silly.

======

amen brother..

Sadly, if Bush would have just listened to his field commanders, OBL would have been either captured or killed back in 2002 at Tora Bora. Instead, a decision was made, over the objection of his own military staff, to give "the honor" of capturing bin Laden to the very same people we had been fighting in the weeks previous to penning OBL in at Tora Bora.

I'm just glad that he's dead and justice has been done. It's been interesting seeing and hearing the talking heads on the Right choking over the event.

Yes, apparently water boarding was responsible for the intell that lead them to the courier, which lead them to bin laden. So torture paid off after all. :rolleyes:

Love the rolling eyes, RA! Yeah. What they won't tell you is that that info wasn't gathered from torture. It wasn't until they stopped using the torture methods and started using regular interrogation methods that a year later the info was procured.

What I read in today's Boston Globe, was that some information was obtained in 2008. This was pieced together with other information obtained from other detainees, as well as electronic surveillance of the suspect's family's e-mail accounts and telephone conversations, once the courier's full name was obtained and identify verified. This was years in the making. Some information was obtained through "enhanced techniques" - although the Globe did not specifically state "waterboarding". Personally, I don't care. The SEALS got him, finally, and that's all I care about.
