think we need a global ID!!!! living with terrorists isn't much fun - think having IDs might help keep track of the people who want us dead. As an American living overseas - think it's a great idea - need one that can't be copied - eye iris ID, fingerprints and anything else that can't be duplicated.

The Maine Legislature on Jan. 26 overwhelmingly passed a resolution objecting to the Real ID Act of 2005. The federal law sets a national standard for driver's licenses and requires states to link their record-keeping systems to national databases.

Within a week of Maine's action, lawmakers in Georgia, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, Vermont and Washington state also balked at Real ID. They are expected soon to pass laws or adopt resolutions declining to participate in the federal identification network.

"It's the whole privacy thing," said Matt Sundeen, a transportation analyst for the National Conference of State Legislatures. "A lot of legislators are concerned about privacy issues and the cost. It's an estimated $11 billion implementation cost."

The law's supporters say it is needed to prevent terrorists and illegal immigrants from getting fake identification cards.

Might be a good idea for those who travel and are global citizens. For us people of the land - maybe not, Fish. You always need to be concerned about the potential for explotation by govt entities. I don't trust them.

understand your point Linn - in the UK it's going through - national ID that is - real necessity to keep track of people who want to do harm - sad to think that in the States people fear the gov't more than terrorists.

I don't agree we should have a Nalt. Id either Fish, we have enough government in our face. Anyone can get fake id and SS#'s as it is, sure they could do the same with a Nalt Id or driver lisc.
