Unexplained object streaks across North County sky
By: North County Times -
NORTH COUNTY -- Authorities couldn't explain Friday exactly what streaked over San Diego County on Thursday night.
"It was a big red ball, looked like fire, across the sky," said Fallbrook resident Gloria Dwyer. "I'd never seen anything like it before, so it was amazing."
Officials said reports were received about 8:30 p.m. as the phenomenon was spotted on what appeared to be a southeast to northwest course. A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said it was also seen in Orange County.
"There were a whole bunch of calls," said Officer Alicia Contreras of the California Highway Patrol.
She said the sheriff's helicopter unit couldn't locate anything after calls started coming in at 8:26 p.m.
Someone thought a plane had gone down in the Mission Gorge area near Santee, Contreras said. Another caller reported an object down west of Mount Woodson, between Ramona and Poway.
"Apparently one of the (Highway Patrol) officers saw a large shooting star out over the Pacific Ocean," at 8:28 p.m., Contreras said.
A spokeswoman for Vandenberg Air Force Base said it hadn't launched anything recently.
