Going to stick around for the solar cycle topic._ I find that more interesting.

The solar stuff is more appealling. Maybe I'll get back to messing with ham radio if the cycle is on the upswing again..

I had a CB radio many years ago and could shoot skip during solar cycles.

Is there any point in even trying to buy a ham rig and run it through the RF interference in NYC? I've been thinking about it, but really don't know enough yet to decide what to do.

My landlady is OK with me putting an antenna on the roof if that helps.

There must be some ham clubs in the area. If you can hook up with them they would have some ideas on how to operate HF in the city. They might also just say to move upstate...

I think I will buy Ham Radio For Dummies and take it from there. I'd really love to jump in to that hobby to say the least. Had a blast with an AM transmitter this past summer in my hood :)

I know the ARRL has some excellent books for beginners, and they don't use the term dummy. It certainly wouldn't be impossible to operate in that enviroment but there are some challenges. I think HF(short-wave) is the most susceptible to interference.

I used to mind the term dummies on the books, but as time has gone on and I have become more familiar with them, I think they are generally quite good and worth a look when you're a beginner with anything.

I'll check out those ARRL books as well :)

I think one of their popular entry level books is "Now You're Talking".
