ORR~16-17 Feb 08~Ian Punnett w/Dr. Leonard Sax

Saturday 16 Feb 08 - Ian interviews Dr. Leonard Sax

Dr. Sax enjoys a unique perspective on children. As a Ph.D. psychologist, he is familiar with the academic literature on child development. In fact, he has continued to publish scholarly papers since starting his practice. But he is no ivory-tower academic. Instead, as a family physician, he has an unusually intimate relationship with about 2,000 children (his total practice includes over 5,000 active patients).

As I mentioned in Art's thread the reviews on Mr. Sax's book are very good and ranks around 1600 on amazon.com, I buy a lot of books and reviews are important to me from that aspect too aside from making a decision to listen to a interview unless of course it is Art and I would probably listen if he were interviewing a rock.:D

Tonight's topic is something that has been bothering me to no end. The problem is, it's difficult to have a rational discussion about it because too many people on polar opposite ends of the sexism spectrum- male and female- let their emotions or sociopolitical ideology get the better of them, and they cease being rational human beings and become slavering zealots. Coast to Coast under Art or Iain is the best place to hash out this subject matter with a minimal amount of nuttery.

The Subject-
It has been an eye-opening experience for me to see how the average children are being raised, male AND female, and the resulting lack of respect, honor, integrity, etc. that has become rampant in just a few years. This aspect of social devolution shocked me so much that I didn't even notice the apathy issues with male children until recently. I had always chalked it up to a symptom of the craptastic attitude and ethical framework that all-too-many youth exhibit these days.
It wasn't until I noticed that young women had become as driven and, dare I say it, predatory as young men used to be, and their male peers seemed to lack any drive whatsoever that I noticed the gender-gap. I am interested in hearing Dr. Sax' take on this and his explanations, especially since I plan on raising my children equally, with no differences based on gender, in the home (yes, including homeschooling). I want to see if raising them among their family (we're a clannar family, with extended family relatives living near each other and having a hand in the upbringing of the children) will dodge this bullet, or if there are factors that will still threaten our boys.
Bah! It's modern technology, if it's not working yet then you're not using a big enough hammer!

oh, to clarify, when I say our children are being raised with no difference in gender, they are ALL being raised to be hardened, skilled, squared-away men and women capable of handling the chaos that the future may throw their way. To quote Heinlein-
“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.”
:D

I agree with you Breandan, you made some very good points. Everything is so out of whack now, I wasn't raised that way and neither were my children......my grandchildren who are only 7 and 5 are being raised the right way, my concern is what will be the influence as they get older from thier peers.
