How to record
I noticed some of you guys were talking about recording streaming audio. I used total recorder and tried a old interview with Father Martin that someone had poster a link to. I recorded 1 minute of audio and it was 13 megs in size. Is there another program or someway to compress this where it will not take up so much space on hard drive.
THanks in advance

Dang !!! ..that's a lot of space..sure it's not 3 megs ? I never used Total Recorder myself but I know there's a few here who has and are smart with that stuff and they'll be around shortly to help .Is there way to record directy into a MP3 file with Total Recorder? ...I thought there is ....anyway I use MusicMatch to compress Wav into Mp3's ...works okay.

I use and highly recommend MusicMatch Jukebox 7.5
http://www.musicmatch.com/
It will do everything you want it to.
Record from any source - tape, CD, radio, VCR, streaming audio, online, it will convert various sources to mp3, change the size of downloaded files from 320 kbps to 32 or less down to 8kbps.
I use it to record Art Bell with excellent results.
I can burn a 80 min CD in a few minutes.
100% burn ratio.

Howdy civilian ,
I have the MusicMatch Jukebox also on my Dell 8200. Use it to decompress Wav and even larger MP3 files into smaller chunks ..works okay . I tried to record stream audio but it would'nt let me . I think it's cause I don't a have a onboard sound card ( I don't think I do anyway ) ..is there anyway to make it work via my regular sound card ( Creative SB Live ) ? ...or am I using the wrong map ?

Total Recorder can record directly to MP3 format if you download the Lame MP3 encoding DLL and put it in the Total Recorder directory and set it up. For talk radio, use a lower sampling rate and bitrate, like 11Khz mono, 16Kbit/sec. You are probably using 44Khz/128Kbit/sec which is for high quality stereo music - not mono talk radio! My MP3 files recorded with Total Recorder at 16Kbit/sec take up only around 3MB per half-hour segment. I can easily fit an entire 5 hour show on a 32MB portable MP3 player.
Google for ASF Recorder, free, small, never breaks, can open as many of them as your pipe will accommodate (e.g., can have a couple dozen streams being recorded at once, if you have good net connection).
Records in wma/asf format -- 5h c2c show takes up 30mb or so.
Any easy/free app to (batch?) convert wma to mp3? but not in real time

Music Match Jukebox 7.5 is very, very easy to use. I can record streaming audio in less than a minute, have hundreds of CDs as proof.
I record every day.
Compare the number of users for both.
Don't take my word for it.

I had Total Recorder. Its OK - very simple to use, but without the features.
I can add photos to my files and I can add text to add background to a show! Unlimited.
Great for research purposes.
On another note... the WinMx program is really bad for accessing any Art Bell shows.
The audio is terrible. Not worth saving, in my opinion. I record at 64 kbps and even at 128 kbps. Those who have posted that it dosen't matter its only audio, I disagree.
I only record at higher bit rates because the difference is noticably better, besides, I like to record Art Bell Bumper music on my
Art Bell shows at the end, to round out to 79 minutes plus per disk.
Kazza, not much better.
I covered this subject in great detail in an earlier post. Step by step instructions, see the archives.
My recordings are as good or better than the tapes sold by Premiere. (better, wink)

I would love to know how you do this as the server will only stream at a given max rate. You cannot download streams 'in seconds'.<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">I can record streaming audio in less than a minute, have hundreds of CDs as proof.

Recording talk radio in 128kbps is a waste of space IMO. 32kbps in mono is just fine. Do what you like, but in 128 is really for local or cd-based playing, no good for online trading.
Again IMO MusicMatch is OK, but commercial software. It costs $ and there are free progs that will do as well or better. I got it free bundled with my Audigy 2 Platinum, but after using it once it was uninstalled and never seen again... Check out ASFrecorder, or Offline Explorer (just going to try this tonite, so no idea how goood it is yet). Anyways, who wants to record Snoory?!?
Of course the game is rigged. Don't let that stop you - if you don't play, you can't win.
