Post by megman » 05-09-2010 01:59 AM

Has anybody here had experience growing Stevia from seed?

I have been attempting but having a rough go of it.

I’m not a flower guy, but my wife is and says it’s a little blue purple flower that comes back year after year. One of the hardiest in her flower garden. She says, you may be too far north.

It has been a dismal failure so far, as have all my seeds I started.

Major issue appears to be moisture and temp, both of which I am having trouble controlling.

The only thing I've had issues with growing in the past from seed is my hot peppers. If I just potted them and let 'em go they were fine. As soon as I started anything fancy (special seed-starter trays, domed lids, etc) they go to ****e.

Even my tree is toast. Put my tree out on a really nice day, went to work, and frost hit before I could get home.

My green thumb has gone mouldy...........

Megman.... Love hot peppers.

I also failed at first with the domed plat starting trays. They work wonderful controlling the environment to germinate seeds but after the seeds sprout is important to remove the dome and allow air circulation. DO NOT fertilize until the plant is established or those little dudes will tip over and look like a clear-cut forest.

The only tip I can give as far as climate goes is go to a Glass company. They will most likely have old patio doors they have replaced. It’s a good source for cheap, if not free, insulated glass. Along with a few 2x4s and you have an extended season area for your plants.

You already have the most Important ingredient in raising plants…..the will to succeed!
Good luck brother.

megman - do not feel bad about hot pepper problem - even I had problems with starting some from seed this year. The old ones (old in that they are a few years old) in the planters are doing fine and I was able to pick up some starters from a local nursery. I'll go back to saving seeds from this year's growth and plant them as needed.

All others are doing great and will be planted in the ground early this weekend - more rain coming in - just when I got things dry enough to plant. I hate digging in the mud to plant flowers or veggies so it is wait again...
