Ya they say the cracks in soil are so bad in places -- TX, NM, AZ - hardest hit areas and even in OK -- you could step in those cracks and sink to - almost to knees...
NOW why couldn't they figure out a way to capture the Missouri River flooding and send it on down...?

We do have a few acres of garden. (Gee live in the country.) Still picking tomatoes and peppers, ocra and squash.
Just brought in two winter squash that were turning orange ripe color (b4 bugs get them). Fighting bugs after rains wash away protection is ongoing. Not sure what these winter squash are - something in butternut family - but 5lb 11+ ounce and 6lb 8+ oz is a bit big and heavy; and of course kept on part of their stem! no external damage so will go into storage with those.

The pasture (former stallion's winter pen area) is where the sweet corn, 67 tomatoes, summer and winter squash are growing. (corn done now) Past the north side of that area is where we have a solar collector "A" frame where the reflector is now up against the "A" so had green beans and dill growing there. We have a pepper patch off south end of deck (10 & 11 plants per row) 8 rows from east garage and out. Right next to the deck (another row of peppers - south side). East side of deck is where I grew onions and more tomato plants (7 regular and one volunteer - not sure if it salad or cherry type - small ones similar to some I grew last yr). In a corner area further south - is cucumber patch and potatoes. On west side of 3car garage and shop is a raised bed (outside shop area) where there are more onions, ocra, three hot peppers and zucchini. Earlier it held lettuce and spinach leaf.
Basically that's the veggie gardens. Flower gardens are on west end side of the house an north side of the house. Further in yard area are row flower beds.

The hardest is just keeping up with 'weeds' this year due to all the off/on rains followed by high temps. I have an old "milk crate" that I sit on to work between rows of peppers and some of the tomatoes (by deck area). I did use that black/gray paper in the large tomato area and that has helped tremendously! The only thing I plan to change (besides moving rows a bit one way or the other) is to change the wire baskets to a newer type with a LOT more wood stakes to help hold up the plants!

Cherry you have a lot to take care of and I think your a lot

younger than me. My son slow baked some of small tomates

200 oven, broiler pan lined with foil, but he ate a lot of them

me too, so sweet tasting South side of house raised bed

has tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and back east much

slower to ripen in bed, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and

crookneck squash, onion, galic and artichokes, swisschard

string beans and its so worth it, even just for the taste.

No chemicals used and not many bugs:crazyjump

Joan - I am a baby boomer - born in 1947.

Yesterday we did more spaghetti sauce, today is pint jars of tomato-zucchini and ocra. Later get the dehydrator going for peppers.

Tomorrow - REST! :)

ayup Joan you are older than I am...

Been busy - ya canning, drying peppers, more canning - tis that time of year!

Very colorful too! Red ripe tomatoes from just plain canned tomatoes to spaghetti sauce and salsa > to dill pickled green tomatoes!

Did can a few colorful peppers too - mild ones in yellows and orange color so getting to be a rainbow of color!

This morning we had a 2inch rain shower (about hour-hour+ time) - gone and sun is shining. FALL weather coming!

Just put a batch of cayenne peppers in the dehydrator and was pulling hornworms of the tomato plants. The chickens love that.

Jeannie canned some fantastic dill pickles a couple of weeks ago that I taped into already. Yum!

Jeannie was asking if it was to late for starting cabbage from seed. What do you think Cherry ? Remember I am down here by the Arkansas Missouri state line.

badspell: cabbage seeds - would be too late to start as they require months to grow and with winter coming? Leaf lettuce, spinach and similar short growing (from seed to maturity) works fine in the fall.

The best thing to do is look at the package (or check on line) for any seeds - from time for seeds to sprout and time for maturity of product. Many internet sites also list planting zones. (and show maps)

Have had no luck with cilantro, dies out quick luckily can

get organic at nearby store.......
