Now Recruting New Members for Fantastic Forum Seti Team!
Okay, Pirates -
We've had a few crunchers turn in their sabers and jump ship. So we'll say soooo loooong mates! And happy crunching to you in others areas of the galaxy.
We are recruiting hearty pirate folk here - with good sea legs, able to weather storms upon the high seas and hold yer rum when the decks pitch and roll! - {a few dubbloons (WUs) wouldn't hurt either!}
Arrrrrrrrrrrh!
So, come aboard mates!
No landlubbers here!

Hey, Daboodaddy!
Yeeesssss! You're still here with us Pirate crunchers! I've turned my cruncher back on! Hope the 'ole processor can take the heat! I just can't seem to get into the refrigerated cooling systems some of these 'techie pirates' set up. Just hope I don't blow out the ballast!
As they say, Daboodaddy - Keep on crunching!
And it's a pirate's life for me!

Linnea, I went to TTR because you posted a message at the site you set up for people to exchange e-mails when the FF closed briefly...the message stated that since there was no more FF there would obviously be no FF seti team...you suggested we might want to join TTR. I did, then quit and went solo for a while because there wasn't even a seti thread here anymore...till today, so I went back to TTR because I found no other team I wanted to join. If there is a FFST, that is where I want to be; if there comes a time when there is no FF seti team, I will stop crunching. That's that! I am a pirate and a pirate I will always be Damn the torpedos!!!
BTW - Gwen. I did want to keep the seti teams here, but got no response from TTR about whether they wanted to keep their presence here or not. So - in trying to be fair, I thought not to post our FF Seti Team either. But now, as you say - Damn the Torpedoes! And we've got the USS TEXAS riding escort at off our starboard bow!
Yeah! Gwennie!
{edit to add: I just turned in another WU! and I've got some crunching to do to catch up!}
BTW - Captain Kundalini is joining the FFST Team! He should be online soon!
Welcome Cap'tK!
I think he will really do some crunching! He's got an awesome computer! And, we now also have the USS Excalibur NCC 56413 in synchronous orbit above our ship!

Linnea, You may want to get a Peltier cooler for your PC. It works so well that on one side it is hot enough to burn your fingers, but on the reverse side it is quite cool. May want to go to "Price Watch", to price them. You still need the usual fan compatable with your processor.
Question EVERYTHING, even your OWN thoughts.

Daboodaddy, Peltiers are a good idea. I have one with my water-cooler.
BUT...............
If the peltier dies, and they do die, there is no heat tranfer from the CPU to the heatsink, as there will be a buffer zone; ie, the dead peltier. The CPU will be dead in a matter of seconds, quicker on a PIII or a P4.
There is also the power consideration to run it. I've had to resort to a seperate power supply.
You also need a real good heatsink/fan to dissapate the heat created from the peltier. The cold side will only get as cold as the amount of heat taken off of the hot side. If cooling is insuffiecent, heat can transfer back, negating the effect.

With what it would cost you for the peltier and a good heatsink, you could get the same cooling effect from an Orb or a Super Orb heatsink/fan.<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by daboodaddy:

Hi Megman!
Thanks for the tech support! If you are not overclocking, you shouldn't have to worry about this cooling, should you?
Daboodaddy. I've got a Pentium II with a 166 mhz processor. Question: if I set up another pc to crunch - how do you get it to 'report' back and forth to seti - as 'you'? Always wondered that.

Not a problem Linnea. I've been the whole nine yards with this stuff.
I've found that most stock heatsink/fans only give you minimum cooling, even for a PI. Even an Orb can give you a 10-20C temp difference, and the cooler you can keep the CPU, the more stable it will be and will also extend the life span. For the money, I would look at an Orb anyways. They really do a great job. When my water-cooler/peltier is not running, I use a Super Orb, and it is only 5-10C warmer with it. Excellent piece of hardware.
Super Orb
As for your second box reporting back to seti, just configure it the same as your original. All WU's will be credited to the same e-mail address if you use the same one. If you network them, use can use Setiwatch.

Captain Kundalini reporting for duty. Well, I've downloaded the SETI program and registered it. It's up and running. Now what?
