Welcome aboard Chuck!

I just bought an e-machine from wal-mart for myself for $498. It is an AMD Athlon 2000XP...2 GHz with 128 Mb of ram and it is processing a WU at a rate of 1 every 4.5 - 5.5 hours. Not a bad investment for the home and serious WU crunching power. Just thought I would pass it along to anyone who is looking at buying an inexpensive PC in the very near future.

Yup, there now.......again I guess.

Looks like they were in the yo-yo phase when I was checking. I wouldn't be concerned about upgrading it.

Due to a legal issue, we are suspending the BOINC beta test, and we have requested that BOINC source code no longer be available at Sourceforge.net. We hope to resolve this issue soon.

David Anderson and Eric Heien both gave me the same reply...they aren't supposed to say anything until it moves further along. I imagine, though, that it has something to do with BOINC Snowboards having already used the name. Just my guess.

Us beta-testers also got a form letter stating that it would likely be a month before BOINC restarted so we're all waiting in the wings.

I'll keep everyone posted.

What version should I be using, meg?

If your worried about the glitch they found then run the 3.08. But your odds of getting attacked by pirahna are better than having a prob with the 3.03.

That's all I'm running.

Tracker3,

I have almost the identical machine...WinXPPro running on an AMD AthlonXP2000+ chip with 512 MB RAM and I'm getting all my wu's processed in under 3:13...the average is 3:10...and the clock is at 1.724 GHz. Are you overclocking that machine? Or maybe you are running the screensaver version?

Just for everyone's info: I just downloaded the new version of SETI Driver and the 3.08 cmdline version of the SAH client and I'm switching back to the 3.03 cmdline version since my times went way up from 3:10 to over 4:30. That's unacceptable. I wonder what they did in the coding to make such a significant change in the times. Kinda wish I had the source code to take a look.:D

It's a personal decision on everybody's part but I'm sticking with the 3.03 version until my wu's no longer get accepted with it.

3:10 per wu with:
XPPro
Athlon XP2000+ overclocked to 1.724GHz
2 rows of 256 PC2100 (133) 64bit SDRAM

Only things I have running, except when I have to connect to the net, are SETI Driver and cmdline. Dedicated machine, in other words.:D

No overclocking and running the screensaver version also only running windowsxp home edition and only 128mb DDRam. That is amazing the speed you have with yours. Definately gonna look into the cli when I am more comfortable and I bet the windowsxp overhead is critical too and wonder if windows 98 would be even faster. Just curious any suggestion are always welcome.

One great tool you might want to check out for WinXP Home and Pro is: http://www.blackviper.com That guy went to a lot of trouble to list every service you have running or could have that doesn't really need to be there. Check that site out. It saves a lot of RAM!

Also, check out my tutorial in the ORR Cheetos room which is listed on here somewhere in this thread for a tutorial on how to set up the cmdline client with SETI Driver. It improves your times by a lot.

Thanks to you both Mark and Gwen. I am running the screensaver version on all my machines so far I have brought 15 up out of 30 and no problems yet. I will try out the cli on a couple of machines that I brought on in the beginning and see how it works out. No doubt boost my daily WU production immediately over 15 machines. I will follow your instructions to the tee and get back with you on it.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Cli install

I followed your instructions and installed the CLI on one of my P4 2.4 GHz (newest computer on our network) and it is looking like 10% every 15 minutes. 2.5 hrs! Oh man I am gonna let them run for a day or two to be safe and see if it is safe with our other client software and if so I am gonna change 'em all!

BIG SMILEY FACE :D

Thanks guys!
