Climatically driven fluctuations in Southern Ocean ecosystems
"Population models derived on the basis of these oceanic fluctuations indicate that plausible rates of regional warming of 1degree C over the next 100 years could lead to more than a 95% reduction in the biomass and abundance of krill across the Scotia Sea by the end of the century"

Global Environment Outlook - GEO-4 pdf [21.9MB]
"In the language of James Lovelock's Gaia theory, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that have punctuated 2007 allowed us to take the planet's temperature; Geo-4 shows us what is going on in the blood supply, the lymph system, the intestines and the immune defences"

Biology-mediated temperature control on atmospheric (p)CO2 and ocean biogeochemistry

The Prophet Of Climate Change: James Lovelock
"We have a tremendous amount to do.....[We can return to a more primitive lifestyle and live in equilibrium with the planet as hunter-gatherers, or we can sequester ourselves in a very sophisticated, high-tech civilization] There's no question which path I'd prefer..... It's really a question of how we organize society -- where we will get our food, water. How we will generate energy"

May and June would have told you that the PNW was probably going to have a fairly warm summer (for this region), but July, August and September definitely patterned previous La Ninas. We never had one day over 90 degrees in Western Washington and the Fall has been alternating between moderate/heavy rain and days like today, near 60 degrees and sunny. Typical La Nina patterns for this area. Thanks for the report, Janus.

Role of solar activity in the troposphere-stratosphere coupling in the Southern Hemisphere winter
"The effect of the 11-year solar cycle on the troposphere-stratosphere (TS) coupling in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) late winter/spring is examined through the analysis of observations and simulations with a chemistry-climate model. It is found that the TS coupling in the SH late winter/spring is significantly modified according to the solar cycle; the dynamical coupling between the troposphere and stratosphere becomes stronger with the increasing solar activity. Such modulation of the strength of the TS coupling is found to be the source of the solar-cycle modulation of the annular mode in late winter/spring. A possible mechanism of the solar-cycle-TS-coupling relationship is also discussed"

California fires release 8M tons of CO2
"Our attempts to control fire have had the unintended benefit of sequestering more carbon in our forests and reducing the impact of human combustion of fossil fuels. But as these forests now begin to burn, that stored twentieth century carbon is moving back into the atmosphere"

Elastic uplift in southeast Greenland due to rapid ice mass loss
"The rapid unloading of ice from the southeastern sector of the Greenland ice sheet between 2001 and 2006 caused an elastic uplift of ?35 mm at a GPS site in Kulusuk. Most of the uplift results from ice dynamic-induced volume losses on two nearby outlet glaciers. Volume loss from Helheim Glacier, calculated from sequential digital elevation models, contributes about ?16 mm of the observed uplift, with an additional ?5 mm from volume loss of Kangerdlugssuaq Glacier. The remaining uplift signal is attributed to significant melt-induced ice volume loss from the ice sheet margin along the southeast coast between 62°N and 66°N"

Rapid loss of the Ayles Ice Shelf, Ellesmere Island, Canada
"The ice shelf was likely weakened prior to calving by a long-term negative mass balance related to an increase in mean annual temperatures over the past 50+ years. The weakened ice shelf then calved during the warmest summer on record in a period of high winds, record low sea ice conditions and the loss of a semi-permanent landfast sea ice fringe"

Antarctic sea ice and climate change
"Whilst historical ship charts and satellite images provide evidence for a rapid decline in Arctic sea ice over recent decades, very little is known about the behaviour of Antarctic sea ice before the satellite era. Rainfall variability: Impact of climate change?
"In the Himalayas, the storage of precipitation in the form of snow and ice (in glaciers) over a long period provides a large water reservoir that regulates annual water distribution. The majority of rivers originating in the Himalayas have their upper catchments in snow-covered areas and flow through steep mountains. If there is any climatic variability in the Himalayas the impacts could be felt in the downstream countries - that is, India and Bangladesh"

Observational evidence of solar dimming: Offsetting surface warming over India
"Despite the drastic decrease in solar radiation, the all India averaged surface maximum and minimum air temperatures have been increasing. We all have a stake in future civilisation
"Various reports released at the end of the summer are alarming. In early September, melting of glaciers in Greenland was happening at an unprecedented rate.
