This man's theory is that aliens probably wouldn't bother to visit earth because if they can overcome all the same travel barriers we face, they must be of a much higher intelligence. Therefore, they would view visiting earth kind of boring, the same as we might be if we found nothing but fish on other planets. After visiting 10 planets inhabited only by fish, we would probably not waste our time and effort traveling to other similar planets.

But what if there is life on other planets that's in the same intelligence vicinity as us but are thousands of years advanced technologically? What if they were lucky enough to visit nearby planets where the resources were comprised of things we can't even imagine and the discovery gave them a huge leap in closing the travel barriers we face? We assume we may have to spend more time evolving to a higher intelligence to enable us to recognize the key that will open the door to exploring the universe and beyond.

My point is, there may be beings out there that have the technology to reach us and they may be similar in intellect and social scale. And they may one day wish to communicate. Just because we impatient humans haven't seen it happen in our lifetime, doesn't mean it won't happen sooner rather than later.

Good article! Lots of food for thought, especially for someone knowledgeable about the ins and outs of space travel requirements. Although the knowledge can inhibit the imagination in this area. :)

You're right about the restriction on imagination, RA. Why presume extraterrestrials think like us and are operating under the same constraints? As it is, progress in contemplating travel beyond planetary physical confines may well be stymied by humanity's limited knowledge and "standard" lines of logic and reasoning.

For instance, might otherworldly visitors not come to us from our space at all, but rather from a parallel dimensional continuum? They may not even be strictly native to that particular continuum, but would simply be using it as a 'side door' conduit to move from "Point A" to "Point B" in our dimension, with the actual distance between them being more or less irrelevant.

Beings as I've described may be entities that exist contrary to any concept of life as we know it, with their ability to access such doorways inherently outside the parameters of the standard set of physical sensory perceptions... Furthermore, what hinders human awareness of their means of travel may well extend to the visitors themselves -

So at that rate, though not meeting them who's to say aliens aren't here ALL AROUND US, but we just don't know it??

human visitation

We have this idea that
1. a personal being
2. comes from somewhere and
3. goes somewhere
4. for a period of time

We, who are pulses of energy caught up in a human experience, think of travel this way. But then what if a pulse of energy is caught up in a form from some other world. What's their concept of...

...a personal being--is that just one solo identity?
...coming from somewhere--what if their idea of somewhere isn't the same?
...what if they don't subscribe to this thing we call time?

We wouldn't be able to recognize 'em.
