The Lore of Raven Returning The Sun

Post by maryals51 » 12-20-2017 06:47 PM

A very long time ago, in the Far North Lands, there was a selfish, Evil King. He would steal from The people, paying no head to their sorrow.
He would steal stars from the sky. The people would look up to see the stars fall into his greedy hands.
Sometimes he would steal the moon!
On day, shortly after the Fall Harvest, this Evil King stole the very Sun from the sky!

The People cried out, they were in despair in the long, cold dark nights. They longed for the light of Sun again.

Raven heard their cries, and decided to do something about it.

So, he perched himself atop the King's Tent, near the smoke hole. He looked down to see the Princess, the King's only daughter, drinking tea from a cup.
Now, Raven is a Trickster and excellent Shape Shifter.

Raven knew that The Princess had been longing for a son, but could not find a male anywhere in the Kingdom worthy to wed.
And her father, who loved her and doted on her, wanted a grandson.

So, Raven turned himself into a pine needle and dropped himself into the cup from which The Princess drank her tea. As she drank, she swallowed the pine needle/Raven!
Once he was in her belly, Raven turned himself into a boy child. The Princess, and her father the King, were delighted!
Very soon she gave birth. Raven/Boy Baby grew quickly. And he grew bad tempered, demanding, with a loud, screeching cry!

Raven/Boy Prince demanded playthings. He threw away, in a fit of temper, anything given him.
One day the Evil King opened his Treasure Box and gave to Raven/Boy Prince a handful of the stars he had stolen from the sky.
He played with them for awhile, for they were bright and shiny and we all know how Ravens love shiny things. But, then, with an angry cry, Raven/Boy Prince threw the stars as hard as he could, up thru the smoke hole, where the stars went right up into the sky where they belonged.

And then he howled! And stomped! And demanded another shiny thing to play with. Although he was an Evil King, he was quite indulgent with this Boy Prince. After all, his birth was some kind of miracle!
So he opened his treasure box again and took out the moon for the Raven/Boy Prince to play with.
Raven/Boy Prince did play with it for awhile, but, soon, tossed it so hard up out of the smoke hole, with a spin, that the moon returned to the sky above The People, to spin forever from bright to dark and bright again, and dark again, a ball forever spinning slowly in the night sky

Once again Raven/Boy Prince howled even louder! He screeched and screamed, demanding something even shinier to play with. So, finally, the King went to his special Treasure Box and removed the Sun.

Just as he was handing the Sun to the Boy Prince, Raven changed himself to his natural shape! He grabbed the Sun in his beak and flew out of the smoke hole...higher and higher and higher with Sun in his beak until finally he could place Sun back into the sky where it belonged!

The People rejoiced! They thanked Raven and promised that they would forever honor Raven in paintings and carvings and song and dance.
And, they would forever Celebrate the Anniversary of Raven returning the Sun with parties, feasts, song, dance, merriment and exchanging gifts.

There are many Legends, much Lore, all about Winter, what we scientifically call Winter Solstice, among peoples of the far North.
Since I've been living in Alaska I grok the Legend of Raven!
