War cuts both ways. It devastates humanity and it teaches. It wounds people and it gives us new understanding of how to treat wounds. We do outrageous, immoral things and we learn the cost of them to our souls. War destroys precious things and it gives need to new and valuable things.

The Germans made a lot of improvements to Paris in the early 1940s, too, you know...
