In the 1950's the experimental Gyrobus was developed and saw brief use.

What if there was an "x prize" offered for the first team to create a working, modernized model of a "Gyrobus"? With modern materials, manufacturing methods, and a couple days worth of Iraq war monies, I'm convinced this ancient technology (it's basically a potter's wheel) could be employed with great efficiency.

If I remember correctly, in order to earn my Cub Scout lawnmower repair bead, I had to explain to my pack leader the principle of flywheels and stored energy... it's not complicated.

But wait - it's probably not a big money maker. Might not require a massive industrial infrastructure, or a perpetual commodity war either. On second thought, forget it. Put it back on the shelf for another 100 years or so.
