19-year-old inventor finds way to clean up the world’s oceans in under 5 years time
By Jack Taylor - Twitter: pm@vrzone

Previously the idea of cleaning up the world’s oceans with their vast accumulations of disposed plastic material was considered an impossibility. Now a 19-year-old inventor says he and his foundation has a way to clean up the world’s oceans, and not only does he say we can do it, but that we can do it in five years time and produce a profit from it.

It is called the ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch’ or sometimes the “Pacific Trash Vortex”, and it is a massive collection of plastic particles accumulating in the Pacific. Other oceans have their own collections of plastic wastes as well; furthermore, most of the debris in our oceans are plastic materials that accounts for approximately 90% of all the waste debris.

Scientists have considered all manner of ways how the debris could be retrieved but there was no clear answer for it.

Now a 19-year-old inventor by the name of Boyan Slat says we can remove nearly 20 billion tons of plastic waste with his concept he calls an ocean cleanup array. It is made from a massive series of floating booms and processing platforms that gradually suck in the floating plastic like a giant funnel.

The angle with how the array is set up allows all of the plastic to go to where the platforms processing centers are floating. At the platform processing area it would separate the naturally occurring life such as plankton an only keep the plastic materials to be recycled.

What is most impressive about the array is that once it goes operational it would clean up the oceans in only 5 years time! He also makes a point in saying that due to the vastness of our oceans most do not know how badly polluted the oceans really are.

“One of the problems with preventive work is that there isn’t any imagery of these ‘garbage patches’, because the debris is dispersed over millions of square kilometers,” Slat says on his website. “By placing our arrays however, it will accumulate along the booms, making it suddenly possible to actually visualize the oceanic garbage patches. We need to stress the importance of recycling, and reducing our consumption of plastic packaging.”

Slat was able to come up with the idea while in school, and so he wrote a paper on his concept. Once Slat's paper was published it immediately caught the attention of many marine experts. His paper won all manner of prizes, which included the Best Technical Design 2012 from the Delft University of Technology.

When he and others realized that the concept would work he took a leap of faith and created a non-profit organization he calls The Ocean Cleanup Foundation. This group will focus on the goal of developing his invention, raise funds for it and make it operational as soon as possible. His concept would save numerous aquatic species of fish and help reduce PCB and DDT containments affecting all of us. Best of all it operates on the power of the sun and by the oceans themselves.

Not only is Slat's concept self-powered, it would also be very profitable from the all the recycling, which is estimated in the amount of 500 million dollars (U.S.) per year. According to Slat's website it "would make in fact more money than the plan would cost to execute. In other words; it's profitable."

voguy,

Boyan could win the Noble Prize if it get's on the oceans. 8)

Let's hope for this and hope again they don't give it the nickname of "Mulberry II"! Prime Minister Winston Churchill envisioned concrete docks floated to and then sunk to sit securely just off the WW II Normandy Beaches. Then the rough side of Mum Nature came calling in the English Channel. The whole Allied dock system was trashed!

How could his great idea avoid the storms that destroyed the concrete" Mullberries" off the coast of Normandy in June of 1944?

At the FF2, R.I.P., yours truly started a Garbage Patch entry concerned about the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Black Sea, and the Indian Ocean............... :x all with individual gyres having Garbage Patches :( :!:
There I mused why not find a permanent home for the 5 Portuguese mega oil tankers. With huge rectangular holes in their bows all 5 were modified to skim BP's Gulf oil disaster only to be sent away with no work!

A table top plastic still has been invented in Japan turning all plastics back into crude oil. Build greatly enlarged versions and place however many there would be space for inside or on top of the tankers. Skim the surface, cook the plastic into crude oil and the tankers would never run out of fuel. Diesel engines will run on crude oil.

Instead of 5 tankers, how about 1,000 tankers that COULD weather the reasonable storms that might prove his idea non seaworthy.

There's always a Catch 22: Littering along our world's roads, streams and rivers would have to cease and that ain't happen'in :!:

:drink: There goes another plastic pop bottle thrown onto the grass, sidewalk or highway!

 Thankfully flat topped garbage scows towed or pushed out into the Atlantic Ocean are a tragic thing from the past. In closing no city names are noted here from New England, but I bet you remember when that happened every day of the week!

Health Ranger Mike Tweeted this (an update to voguy's find) yesterday! There is a video to watch and no doubt this is the same young man as noted above. He's raised 30 million dollars so far to engage his ideas on removing plastic flotsam hurting our world's ocean's ecosystems.

We hope it works well and it holds up during storms. I have not viewed the video yet so maybe the operators reel it all in until the storm passes.

The South Pacific has it's own gyre swirlling man's freely discarded pop bottles 'n bottle caps, etc., sad, etc.!

This one is as big as Texas :!: :(

http://www.sfgate.com/science/article/g ... 730144.php

Here's an update from the 22 year old genius who hopes to coral the oceans inherited plastics!

Sounds like they are reducing the size to one mile lengths to see how well it works. A ship passing through the pipe dam would not be good. So the area where his gathering system and it's drifting sea anchors are working would have to be off limits!

http://www.sfgate.com/technology/busine ... 140386.php

I wish him luck but I like my old idea posted two posts up, better!

For a comparable PR factor, it's what the public and firefighters might say after watching the largest fire nozzles spraying water on a huge fire. "At least we're doing something, which is better than nothing!"

Re: Caribbean Sea Hurricane choked trashing

Post by Malaria_Kidd II » 10-27-2017 06:38 AM

:o Found on The Drudge Report this morning.............Whoa :!:

Shocking photos show Caribbean Sea being 'choked to death by human waste'

 We wonder if Hurricane Maria's wind driven rain had a helping hand in making this news from the Caribbean Sea!

WARNING :!: If you are long tired of looking at trash, don't look!

It's all waste once held by human hands, but Maria surely contributed to the wide distribution of plastic flotsam that was seen here, for the first time?

As you will read in the Telegraph's report, hurricanes were not mentioned.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/10 ... man-waste/

:drink: A huge percentage of discarded pieces of plastic eventually finds its way into OUR oceans. :realmad:

Hmm! Where's this inventor now? When you really need one :?:

That human toll in tonage as the ocean's "crude oil based floaters" and "micro-beads" looks like job security, someday! So today would be a good day to begin.

Ether take it back, or leave it, for her?.......... :surprised

I'm surprised this article is not gone! It is a nifty solution, but we don't Want solutions now, do we?

Remember when we started dumping old ships in the ocean? Same deal going to kill every thing! Except magnificent coral reefs have established them selves on some them.

Spiral Island

Spiral Island is the name of a floating artificial island built in Mexico by British artist Richart "Reishee" Sowa. It was destroyed by Hurricane Emily in 2005; a replacement, Joyxee Island, has been open for tours since 2008.

Spiral Island has been featured in a number of newspapers and TV documentaries around the world, including in Japan and South Korea, and has been featured in an episode of the Ripley's Believe It or Not! TV series, and on the MTV program Extreme Cribs in 2011.[1]

The first Spiral island was located in a lagoon near Puerto Aventuras, on the Caribbean coast of Mexico south of Cancún; Richart Sowa began constructing it in 1998. He filled nets with empty discarded plastic bottles to support a structure of plywood and bamboo, on which he poured sand and planted numerous plants, including mangroves. The island sported a two-story house, a solar oven, a self-composting toilet, and three beaches. He used some 250,000 bottles for the 66-by-54-foot (20 m × 16 m) structure.

Sowa was ordered to take the island out of the man-made canal in 2004 because many private homes and condos were being built and he lived for one year tied to the end of a loose rock pier. Richart was offered a new location in the bay of Soliman about 200 km south, Finally, he was permitted by Port authorities to tow Spiral Island but the island was destroyed by Hurricane Emily in 2005. Artificial island

History

Despite a popular image of modernity, artificial islands actually have a long history in many parts of the world, dating back to the reclaimed islands of Ancient Egyptian civilization, the Stilt crannogs of prehistoric Scotland and Ireland, the ceremonial centers of Nan Madol in Micronesia and the still extant floating islands of Lake Titicaca.[1] The city of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec predecessor of Mexico City that was home to 500,000 people when the Spaniards arrived, stood on a small natural island in Lake Texcoco that was surrounded by countless artificial chinamitl islands.

Plastics----- A Conundrum...........won't go away, going away too fast!

These Cultural Treasures Are Made of Plastic. Now They’re Falling Apart.

Museum conservators are racing to figure out how to preserve modern artworks and historical objects that are disintegrating.

By XiaoZhi Lim

Aug. 28, 2018

LOS ANGELES — The custodians of Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit at the National Air and Space Museum saw it coming. A marvel of human engineering, the suit is made of 21 layers of various plastics: nylon, neoprene, Mylar, Dacron, Kapton and Teflon.

The rubbery neoprene layer would pose the biggest problem. Although invisible, buried deep between the other layers, the suit’s caretakers knew the neoprene would harden and become brittle with age, eventually making the suit stiff as a board. In January 2006, the Armstrong suit, a national treasure, was taken off display and stored to slow the degradation.

Of an estimated 8,300 million metric tons of plastic produced to date, roughly 60 percent is floating in the oceans or stuffed in landfills. Most of us want that plastic to disappear. But in museums, where objects are meant to last forever, plastics are failing the test of time.

Claiming the plastic flotsam from the Seven Seas could be gone in 5 years. Is akin to a false hope that many of our over confident generals said to their soldiers and sailors during our 19th, 20th & 21st Century wars, " We will all be home by Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc.; "This island will be in our hands in a week."

This orchestration will grow on you! :( The link works ok so just click the pic of the floating plastic island carrying it's own mangrove? trees!

No and yes.

Because the deep sea is the lowest point plastic waste can reach, it ends up accumulating there in staggering amounts.

“This is a very worrying find. Isolating plastic fibers from inside animals from nearly 11km deep just shows the extent of the problem,” said Dr. Jamieson, a researcher studying plastic waste in the ocean. “This is global,” he went on, explaining this isn't a problem that's localized to just one country or area.

Plastic fibers have reached tap water, table salt and other products man consumes - and they're not showing any signs of disappearing.
