Too Much Diversity?

Marvel Says Some Comic-Book Readers Are Pushing Back Against Its Relaunched Titles

Over the past few years, Marvel—which is now owned by Disney—has updated some of its biggest comic-book superheroes with diverse new alter-egos.

Not everyone is happy about Marvel’s quest to become more inclusive. Some fans are resistant to seeing Marvel’s core heroes change. Yet other fans were “invigorated” by the new titles. According to one executive, Marvel’s plans haven’t changed and its new heroes aren’t going away anytime soon.

Diversity can be a good thing, but I really have a problem when we are forced and bullied into any given situation, none us really react well, with a "my way or the highway" attitude. It would be really nice to see that some things are just plainly left alone like comic books, tv shows many other small things, a few of the familiar things that give us comfort as well as joy.

From the article:

"Thor, the Norse god of thunder, is now a woman. A young Muslim woman has taken up the mantle of Ms. Marvel. A black teenage girl is filling the shoes of white billionaire playboy Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man. And Spider-Man is black and Latino."

Wouldn't it make more sense, rather than take established characters and change them to fit a preconceived notion of political correctness to instead, create completely new characters that embody, or even enhance, the best of the characters being changed to be PC?

Just a thought..........

What's the expression - let the market decide? Whether kids or nerds, or kids-who-are-nerds..... ultimately they will decide what they like or don't like - no matter what Disney (whatever happened to THEM, huh?) has to say about it.
There you go man, keep as cool as you can. Face piles and piles of trials with smiles. It riles them to believe that you perceive the web they weave. And keep on thinking free. (Moody Blues)

A Less Than Marvelous Mix-Up
How An Islamic Protest Against A Christian Governor in Indonesia Became A Problem for Marvel Comics

United Airlines wasn’t the only brand to have a bad weekend. Marvel Comics stepped in it, too.

It began last week, when the venerable comics company released the first issue of X-Men Gold, a new series designed to revive its X-Men storyline. The artwork was done by Ardian Syaf, an Indonesian freelancer who is Muslim.

Discovered by fans after its publication, Syaf’s artwork at least twice referenced a scandal involving Gov. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama having allegedly blasphemed against Islam. Other readers identified anti-Semitic references in other frames.

Syaf took to Facebook to defend himself in a series of posts that have since been removed. Vulture reports the artist said he intended to embed the coded messages, but that “a lot of good friends” are Jews and Christians. He said he opposed Purnama because of the Christian politician’s alleged blasphemy.

Marvel wasn’t having it. The company fired Syaf on Tuesday (April 11).

“These implied references do not reflect the views of the writer, editors or anyone else at Marvel and are in direct opposition of the inclusiveness of Marvel Comics and what the X-Men have stood for since their creation,” Marvel said in a statement. “This artwork will be removed from subsequent printings, digital versions, and trade paperbacks and disciplinary action is being taken.”
