WWF 30 Years Ago Today: Savage On The Edge

Post by Riddick » 05-02-2017 12:59 AM

Shortly after WM III, with the Macho Man's popularity to the point he was cheered by a legion of fans despite being a heel, WWF teased a face turn on national TV.

On Saturday Night's Main Event airing 5/2/87, Hercules battled Ricky Steamboat as the anxious ex-IC champ monitors the match backstage, hoping Steamboat retains the title so as to eventually retrieve it from him in a WM III rematch.

When Herc takes control and locks a full nelson on Steamboat, Savage races to the ring to make the save. Hilarity ensues as Hercules and Heenan get in Randy's face.

Afterwards Savage stays near ringside in the aisle. Hercules chokes Steamboat out with his chain for a DQ finish. Savage can be heard saying "Steamboat’s the winner!" Heenan and Hercules leave, staring down Savage along the way.

Randy hits the ring and appears sympathetic... but sneaks up top and hits the big elbow on Steamboat and you can hear portions of the audience cheering - Though only a tease of a turn, his fans turn 2 thumbs up for the Macho Man OOOH YEAH!
