SEARCH ALL YOU WILL YOU'LL NEVER COME BY A MORE DECIDEDLY ATYPICAL EASTER SUNDAY HOLIDAY FLICK

His hipster wit is all over the scripts of Lolita and Dr Strangelove, which he polished up with a cynical sheen for Stanley Kubrick, and yet with such cultural credits to his name perhaps the finest example of Terry Southern's slyly subversive work on the big screen is the seriously whacked-out and uproariously wicked, hilarious and savagely satiric cult-classic The Magic Christian.

Based on his novel of the same name, Southern's swinging '60s setpiece is a series of comic vignettes, some penned by script polishers & soon to be key Monty Python heads Graham Chapman and John Cleese, all played out to the music of Badfinger.

Peter Sellers played grand guy, Sir Guy Grand - billionaire by birth, entrepreneur by avocation, and thoroughly unpredictable. He "keeps his hand in", buying into and revolutionizing industries ranging from championship boxing to African safaris. Is he a crackpot, or an eccentric, or perhaps a visionary with a goal of social redemption?

His son Youngman was played by Ringo Starr, undeniably good as the affable loser adopted by Guy early in the film. The father/son mission to test the limits of human avarice involves concocting and executing all manner of pranks lampooning the holy cows of money, status, power, beauty, media, and stardom.

Grand's greatest tour de force launches Easter Sunday, as the most luxurious cruise ship ever sets sail on its maiden voyage. What's on board the 'S.S. Magic Christian' to regale its 400 carefully selected passengers? The elite are treated to a series of madcap indignities, with special roles played by a dazzling array of famous film stars

Rich enough to do whatever he likes, what Guy likes is to cauterize by ridicule what all-too insouciant folks fail to see: greed, corruption, pomposity and idiocy... and if you think on it the rate things are going it'd cost Grand a pretty penny to keep up!
A mind should not be so open that the brains fall out; however, it should not be so closed that whatever gray matter which does reside may not be reached. ART BELL
