GNU Image Manipulation Program or GIMP

Is anybody familiar with the GNU Image Manipulation Program? How does it compare to Photoshop? Is it for beginners or pros or...? Web design? Large graphics? Strictly photo editing? I can't seem to find an extensive review so far.

Any piratical input is appreciated.
