It was announced today that Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams, who supposedly married secretly earlier this year in order to buttress their increasingly shaky relationship, have split amicably. Both love their daughter Matilda deeply and plan to be intensely in her life...

Sad. But I guess that's just how life is...

I finally saw the film, Joe... I can't say it any better than you did.

One thing: Like Ennis, I wish Jack had left him alone, but I don't think Ennis was quite sincere in that request.

Joe, if you want to post up some final thoughts here - we need to close this thread - and maybe start another one.

Threads need to be limited to about 500 posts or so - before we start 'Part Two'.

Creating archives - and this thread will be available as an archived thread - as we get some archiving done here.

I find this hard to believe, but it appears that "Brokeback Mountain" author Annie Proulx has granted Pulitzer-Prize-winning composer Charles Wuorinen the right to compose an opera --- yes, an opera! --- based on her story. The proposed opera will be produced by Beckett Swede.

At least, that is what The New York Daily News tells us...

Joe I am off today and my plans fell through so I decided to check out HBO and there it was Brokeback Mountain, just finished watching it, glad I dd, seems so different than from the first time I watched it, not much to laugh at but certainly much to cry about.

Why Can't Those Fags Just Stay in the Closet?

Adam B. Very, "Gay Hollywood? Out of Sight?," EW.Com

In the weeks before the 78th annual Academy Awards, Brokeback Mountain producer Diana Ossana already suspected what few outside Hollywood could imagine: Her film was going to lose the Best Picture race. ''Several people told me they knew a lot of Academy voters who just refused to see the film,'' says Ossana, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Larry McMurtry. This tragic love story between two men had dominated the critics' awards and banked $178 million worldwide. It even captivated sellout crowds in states like Oklahoma and Ohio — just not, apparently, in Academy screening rooms. ''What are they afraid of?'' McMurtry asked Ossana. ''It's just a movie.''

But Brokeback was more than a movie. It was a phenomenon that commanded the cultural conversation for months, from Jay Leno to YouTube to the cover of The New Yorker. More important, it proved that straight audiences would snap up tickets to a same-sex romance. Since then, a few gay-themed films have been released (e.g., Notes on a Scandal). But seemingly no studio — nor any studio art-house division — has greenlit a film with a gay lead character. ''I don't think any studio responded by saying, 'Quick, dust off whatever gay dramas we have!''' says one former studio head. As surprising as it seemed that Brokeback could lose the Oscar to Crash, the real shock is just now setting in: Brokeback may have changed nothing.

Oh God! What a senseless tragedy! What a loss to the acting profession! God have mercy on Heath’s soul and on his poor little daughter! Oh God!
