de Blasio, citing 'socialistic impulse,' wants more government control of NYC property

Mayor Bill de Blasio cited his "socialistic impulse" in describing an ideal world where New York City government has control over all land and buildings in his city.

“I think people all over this city, of every background, would like to have the city government be able to determine which building goes where, how high it will be, who gets to live in it, what the rent will be,” de Blasio said in a wide-ranging interview with New York Magazine. “I think there’s a socialistic impulse, which I hear every day, in every kind of community that they would like things to be planned in accordance to their needs.”

Asked about housing inequality, the progressive Democrat de Blasio bemoaned the soaring rent and home prices in one of the world’s most expensive cities and said that ideally the city government would be able to implement tough laws around income levels and rents.

"Look, if I had my druthers, the city government would determine every single plot of land, how development would proceed," he said. "And there would be very stringent requirements around income levels and rents.”

Later in the interview, de Blasio admitted that this type of governmental control is not possible right now – saying it causes “friction” and “anger” – but said that there are many people in New York City who would like to have a government that better addresses their daily needs.

The "Socialistic Impulse" Strikes Again!

Between His Holiness & deCommio, church & state ideals in a socialist utopia converge; that is, insofar there is no personal property, only public. Land, air, water, infrastructure, transportation, housing; you name it, ALL THERE IS belongs to the people! Under control of the government, of course.

In this utopia, how and where you live, will that be for you to decide? Don't count on it. OTOH, you can betcher booties both these fellas and all the folks who'll control everything will be living the high life -

Hey, you can't expect THEM to live like the masses! They're special. Just 'cause everyone's equal doesn't mean that some aren't more equal than others

Well, the pope isn't very popular (around here at least) where churches are closing all over the place as they are being sold to pay for the sex-abuse scandals. Three more will be closing here in my hometown this week. One is a major shrine that has attracted people from across the country, Canada, South America and Europe.

We have a story similar to New York's occurring in nearby Providence, RI, where a New York developer wants to build a high rise residential building on land that used to be here a federal highway was, but has since become vacant with the relocation of that portion of the roadway. This new building will dwarf al other buildings in the city, and will require some zoning variances. Even so, the mayor of Providence has said that "the people" of the city (who will be stuck looking at the out-of-place structure) should have some say over a number of issues - which makes sense as the developer will get his money and then bolt once the project is complete. There are vacant residential properties throughout the city which are available. Granted, some need work, but, depending on the rents or mortgage, realistically, who will be able to live in the planned building?
There you go man, keep as cool as you can. Face piles and piles of trials with smiles. It riles them to believe that you perceive the web they weave. And keep on thinking free. (Moody Blues)
