Microsoft has been pushing its Its new Windows Live Messenger pretty hard lately.

Although I do use MSN Messenger I have yet to upgrade to the New Windows Live Version. Has anyone used it? Is it worth using?

Any opinions or input?

I upgraded to the live version and it works fine, I have not really looked into it in great detail, there are some cosmetic changes and things have been moved around, the voice/phone works very good.

I finally installed it. It is essentially the same build as 7.5 with a few cosmetic differences, but I have two issues with it:

1) my ZA has alerted to me that "Windows Live Messenger" was trying to monitor my computer activities even when the messenger was not signed on - aka: Microsux built in spyware. But this can be denied and locked in behind a firewall like ZA allowing you to still use the messenger but deny its ability to Monitor stuff it shouldn't.

2)it removed and deleted all my custom smilies :( Now the hard work begins trying to replace some of them :(

Yeah, I use WinProxy on a server I go through for all Internet access to prevent most of that sneaky stuff. Like for example, if you load a PDF document, that dang software scans your computer for all Adobe software and then tell Adobe about it which in turn alerts you to any updates. grrrr! I have a list of hundreds of blocked sites in my proxy server, and they are easy to add as discovered.

A proxy server is nice too in that you can also block the loading of all those darn ads on most common sites visited, which can dramatically increase page loading time too, especially when those darn animated ads can account for 90% of what is downloaded with each page.

Divinorumus. uninstall that Adobe Reader garbage and download (about 1MB) Foxit Reader for Windows. All the features of Adobe's but none of the "extras" that they think you need. It now comes with an installer but it used to run just fine as an exe. The only difference I detect from Adobe is the icon and that it loads right up, even via my browser - no hesitation..as a document should.

SetiCruncher, sorry to hear about your experience with LIVE. And especially the senseless loss of those poor, defenseless smileys. :( ;) I think LIVE's major plus now is that it integrates seamlessly into your Xbox 360 experience. The closest I have on my system is a Hotmail account that says it's using LIVE but I didn't download anything or install anything. I think I just had to have IE , .net installed and a Passport account. I've had the passport since the 90's, I think have .net for a couple other little programs. I've heard MS Messenger is now compatible with Yahoo's messenger which should be nice. I don't IM much so the little one in gmail is plenty - I have Trillian too but haven't fired that up in months. Same with Gaim, which I hear is better and Open Source.

I'm not sure why any program would get rid of your smileys unless it was Defender killing some spyware. There are some smiley programs that are just that. Much like the old WeatherBug program...Spy/ad-ware. Bad stuff.

If you use Firefox get the SmileyXtra extension and that should satisfy all your smiley requirements. If not, feel free to grab some from my collection or some from the FF smiley page.

More Smileys here

And here

My MSN Live Messenger has been toast all day. Is it just me? Or is anyone else having issue?

There seems to be several issues with the live version, I experienced one of them, on my main system, XP Pro, I had no problems with the upgrade and It works fine, however In another room on a box running XP Pro, It would not work, and actually locked up the computer when I tried to use Messenger, I tried everything possible and It still screwed up..

Took the Live version off, went back to old version, works perfect..

I really put lots of time and effort into trying to figure why this happened and still have no idea why this occurred, I also saw on several forums where others were having this same problem, and I tried all the suggested solutions and nothing helped..

I built both boxes and they are very close in specs..

Thanks for the reply Silent :)

I only have Live Messenger on one machine and its worked fine aside from the smilie issue mentioned above. Then as of yesterday without warning its dead. No system changes, nothing, it just won't connect..

The basic Windows Messenger works fine, no problem. Its totally wierd. I'm thinking I might install the Live Messenger on another machine and see what happens.

And they wonder why we call it Microsux...

I will assume you are talking about a Windows OS, you might try Windows Messenger (Messenger Service), If memory serves me correct this is what this service is actually for.

You would most likely want to block the port (firewall)for Internet linkage as this is a way for spammers to be a nuisance..

I think I have to agree with Silent,

As far as I know, the main purpose behind the windows preinstalled "Windows Messenger" was to allow communications between different machines on the same LAN, I think the main reason this is included on all Windows machines these days is to make the Windows Operating System more desirable to business's.
