The first time I 'heard' Art Bell on the radio - I actually 'saw' him. It was a TV show on PBS, of Art in his studio at KDWN in Las Vegas (K-Dawn?) Had heard the show advertised, about an unusual talk radio phenomenon out of Las Vegas. 'Coast to Coast w/ Art Bell' - maybe?
The play up to the show was that we would see a radio host who broadcast his show in near darkness, dimming the studio lights down low - with the flashing red and green equipment lights - as a cockpit of a ship, cruising the night 'til dawn.
The show opened with Art Bell walking down a hallway and into a glass windowed room with radio equipment - and dimming the lights down low. Then it just showed him doing his thing - live on the air.
Very cool! And I have been listening since. At first could not pick up a station nearby, but the show was soon available on a local AM station.
And the website - and the updates and interaction with the audience until the wee hours of the morning. Art, with Keith Rowland - pioneered the interactivity of the internet, the audience, and the radio show. Live streaming... The call ins from the listener lines.
All brilliant and remarkable. Art Bell well deserves this award, and I hope he is enjoying every minute of it.
