Wayne Green a Scientologist?

Did anyone hear Wayne Green espousing the benefits of Dianetics on the show with Barbara Simpson? As many times as he's been on the show, it's the first time I've ever heard him say it. Apparently, he credits L. Ron with turning his life around.

Hitchhiker - I didn't hear Wayne Green's show. Sorry I missed it. I have heard that Hubbard's science of dianetics was a pioneering work into the study of mind and consciousness. The Scientology organization that developed from it has been misdirected - I have also heard. I can see Wayne Green benefitting from a study of dianetics.

Propheteering Business - book review* by Martin Gardner**

Excerpt of review:
______________

For 35 years I believed that L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology, was no more than a writer of mediocre fiction who, lusting for power and money, became one of the world's most successful mountebanks. Russell Miller's admirable, meticulously documented biography has persuaded me otherwise. Hubbard was a deeply disturbed man -- a pathological liar who steadily deteriorated from a charming rogue into a paranoid egomaniac "unable to distinguish", as Miller puts it, "between fact and his own fantastic fiction".

Almost everything Ron ever said about himself was false. He was never a swashbuckling explorer or distinguished naval officer. Although he claimed to be a physicist, his knowledge of science was negligible. His father, a lieutenant-commander in the US Navy, had hoped his son would pursue a similar career, but near-sightedness kept Ron out of Annapolis. His only education was in the engineering school of George Washington University where he dropped out after two years of dismal grades.

During the ten years preceding the Second World War, Ron became one of the nation's most industrious contributors to western, mystery and adventure pulp fiction. His four years in the wartime Navy are summed up in a fitness report saying he "lacked essential qualities of leadership . . . not considered qualified for command or promotion" The closest he came to combat was while in command of a submarine chaser. On its shakedown cruise Hubbard mistook a magnetic deposit for submarines, and his battle against the non-existent enemy cost him his command. Assigned to a ship on its way to a war zone, he at once applied for and obtained transfer to a school at Princeton. "Far from being a hero", Miller concludes, "Hubbard was a malingering coward who had done his best to avoid seeing action".

Ron's record as husband, father and bigamist was even more deplorable. He deserted his first wife, Polly Grubb, and their two children to marry Sara Northrup.

A Mind at Play - An Interview with Martin Gardner [now 87]
Kendrick Frazier

His mind is highly philosophical, at home with the most abstract concepts, yet his thinking and writing crackle with clarity -- lively, crisp, vivid. He achieved worldwide fame and respect for the three decades of his highly popular mathematical games column for Scientific American, yet he is not a mathematician. He is by every standard an eminent intellectual, yet he has no Ph.D. or academic position. He has a deep love of science and has written memorable science books (The Ambidextrous Universe and The Relativity Explosion, for instance), and yet he has devoted probably more time and effort to -- and has been more effective than any thinker of the twentieth century in -- exposing pseudoscience and bogus science.
He is considered a hard-nosed, blunt-speaking scourge of paranormalists and all who would deceive themselves or the public in the name of science, yet in person he is a gentle, soft-spoken, even shy man who likes nothing better than to stay in his home with his beloved wife Charlotte in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and write on his electric typewriter.

A Sci-Fi writer turned messiah -
I think his basic 'dianetics' was a sound neuro-linguistic programming kind of theory. I have heard that the scientology organization is weird and overbearing. Scary even, maybe.

Wayne Green's works reveal a fairly dark personality. He comes across as a mean bully in many respects, imho.

Hi Proudfoot and glad to read you.

Hubbard's organization (cult) seem to bring out the dark side of the personality. I know that an unexamined life has no meaning, but to examine it so frequently with the assistance of people working in a system with a definite attitude problem and drive for making cash flow.

NLP is something from an entirely different theory and did not spring from dynetics, but from Bandlier (sp?). He first made his money using his theory trying to sell us fast food.

NLP - as 'NLP' is a different theory, but the basis for dianetics is similar. Reactions, emotions are embedded in 'engrams' and become a neurophysical programming system as in NLP. The focus in dianetics is on 'reprogramming', removing the blockages associated with these engrams - through associating other thought and feeling with the memories. A method which 'clears' the blockages. This is how one becomes 'a clear' or 'clear' - using dianetics.
