This is a painting that Alan Bean made of himself standing on the lunar surface.

Ummm, what's . . . or who's . . . that behind him to the left?

I guess it's just his pack, but it does look interesting.

I do notice the purple hues in the atmosphere.

This is a picture of John Lear in his flight helmut, on earth, taken a few minutes ago.

What jumps out to me are two things. One is the choice of color, and the second I will try to describe.

You can clearly see the picture taker, and "something else" in the photograph, but not in the painting. I am an artist, and my work recalls events as they are filtered though my memory and emotions, and are not photographic images of the actual event. In other words, if I choose to accentuate or leave out a detail, it is because that is what my minds eye saw, or what I felt (or didn't see or feel), not what was "really" there.

I don't know if this makes sense or not.

Carry on! I'm hooked. ;D

In the photo of Alan Bean in the black and white photos in the link on the previous page, isnt the shadow from the object cast in the wrong direction, considering the reflection is a mirror image?

I could be trying to imagine to hard, and confusing meself :D

I do that a lot ....the confusing meself part I mean :D

Makes perfect sense to me. Art is about reflecting perceptions of reality in the mind's eye.

After viewing your last pic I'm noticing the halo around the the reflection of the sun that is apparent in both face masks. The sun thru a vacuum wouldn't flare and glare like that, would it?

I made a little animation toggling to a high contrast b&w version of the same image. Other than the halo and distortion around the sun I don't see anything out of the ordinary in the reflection..

In his picture of himself he seems to be depicting something that looks like two brown stone walls of two different colors of brown..

What I'm seeing now is that in Alan's painting the sky is uniform other than for directly about the sun's reflection. In John's photo the sky's reflection is much lighter twords the horizon.

I also notice that there is no visible shadow cast by the camera or photographer considering the angle of the sun in the reflection as there is in John's.

And I can't see the photographer or camera's reflection in the mask either..
