What jumps out to me are two things. One is the choice of color, and the second I will try to describe.
You can clearly see the picture taker, and "something else" in the photograph, but not in the painting. I am an artist, and my work recalls events as they are filtered though my memory and emotions, and are not photographic images of the actual event. In other words, if I choose to accentuate or leave out a detail, it is because that is what my minds eye saw, or what I felt (or didn't see or feel), not what was "really" there.
I don't know if this makes sense or not.
