Did anyone else watch James Gandolfini's "Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq" on HBO last night?

(If you don't have HBO, the entire program can be viewed online at the above link. It's tough to watch, and unless you are made of stone, will make you cry, but is worth it.)

One of the screens in the film makes the point that, in all past wars, 90% of what is today the figure given for the wounded would have died.

Corvid and I thought about that... let's see... that means of 27,186 wounded, 24,467 would have died. So, in comparison to past wars, such as Vietnam, Korea, or WWII, the death toll would be much higher... more like 28,238. That's rather sobering to think about.

This 90% of our wounded soldiers are surviving, but for some of them, their quality of life is just horrendous. I am truly left speechless. :(

That is true Joolz. The Army pioneered trauma medicine which is now it's own specialty. Alot of what we did when I worked at one of the nation's top ten academic hospitals was learned through Army Med's experiences. Unfortunately, due to the nature of this war, alot of the injuries in Iraq have been head injury. Rehab and treatment has come a long way, but there is a reason nurses often say that "if I get a head injury please tattoo my chest DO NOT RESUSITATE!":(

Yes, there was one young man who had head injuries (brain injuries) in the HBO special. He was the one who really got to me. :( :( :(

I have read now and then, in various sources, that the US is camoflaging the actual number of Iraq War deaths by the way it counts them. To be counted as having died in the Iraqi War one must actually die in the country. If a service member is wounded and flown somewhere else for treatment (e,.g., Germany) and subsequently dies, s/he is not an Iraqi War death. Further, if a service member commits suicide in Iraq s/he is not counted as a war death.

I get my stats now from here:
http://icasualties.org/oif/
They are not connected to DoD but they don't exagerate numbers either. They also have the name of every soldier whose death has been confirmed. Pretty much any stat on injuries, casualties, etc, is on this site.

I'm glad the link was useful to you, vigo. This is rather unprecedented for HBO to make an entire program available for viewing over the net. I take it that they want as many people as possible to see it. I hope others will also watch it. As I said, it's not easy to watch. But then, it shouldn't be easy.

Thank you Julie for posting this, I don't get HBO so I would have never seen this. Of course, I am in tears. It would be great if you can put this in the documentary area of the ship too.

Thanks Julie, I just watched about 20 minutes and will catch the rest tomorrow evening on HBO, it is too late for me to watch it all right now........just 20 minutes is really sad.
