New Forum Format for the Fantastic?

Post by Linnea » 05-18-2010 11:13 PM

Check this out, Pirates. We are thinking of converting the FF to this format.

http://www.invisionpower.com/

We should be able to draw over all the registered members, post, topics and forums.

What do you think?

What are the advantages of doing this? I liked when you said in another thread that you like the now old school look of this forum, and didn't like contemporary designs.

Maybe it is because I am used to it but I like the look of the ship like it is. :)

This would be fully customizable. Carefully check out what it has to offer before you make a judgment.

Something needs to happen in the way of progress, as this older software will not carry us forever.

V Bulletin has gone rogue, and taken over by exploiters of commerce...

This solution seems the best. Lots of good stuff - which we need.

Me too, Racehorse. I would consult with the 'experts' available to see what customization could be done. I expect we could still have a unique 'look'.

Have you explored all the advantages? They are legion.

Is the occasional hardware (software?) dysfunction of this forum going to continue, or worsen?

It is such an ancient version of VB it has not been supported for ages. If and when something 'goes wrong' - the damage would be fatal. I would like to make a leap while we are still able, and that way could preserve our 'history'. If we waited and something went wrong - we would then stand to lose everything.

Besides. We are bored. No? We need some of the 'new' features. Articles, blogs, customized forums, private messaging, social networking... in addition to the basic bones of the Ship.

The MySQL data base updates that we face down the road - do not support our current forum.

I don't think the sorts of bells and whistles you describe are going to solve the problem; nor do I think the problem is boredom. However, the other issues are compelling. I wish there was a way create a safeguard without changing the ship.

Now that I think about it, when it comes to forum customization options, et al, I think of something like...what was it? Above Top Secret. That site is totally baffling.

Linnea can't you upgrade the backend and leave the front end alone ? I love the way the ship looks, but understand you have to do something.

Yeah - I say upgrade. If the CSS is tweakable (and I think it is), maybe you can come close to the traditional look.

Besides, this isn't the original FF look - I've seen google pull up a *really* old format - it looked like a homebrew- funny, the only people I recognized on that thread were HB3 and Linnea!

Yeah, if I'm a Republican plant, I've been one for a loooooong time...

And one that started as a Democrat, too. Amazing!

We do not have to take immediate action, but soon (before end of the year, maybe).

We would attempt to do just that, Linda. ;)

Or as close as we can..

One advantage, HB - is we could gather up new members with the exposure the new software could bring. We need new members to keep this place relevant and alive, I think. Don't we?

Yeah, you're a plant and Rombaldi has the herbicide!

But any way, I agree with the simple look/useability. The color scheme here is great as well.

For what it's worth, Drupal might have a solution - but I have no idea how to migrate/convert a database this large.

Haha! We started with the UBB...in 2000, and made the leap to VB in 2003, I think.

We waited in horror - not knowing if the forum would ever 'reappear'.
