Midway through what looks to be adding up to be a VERY wintery weekend here in his Upper Midwestern habitat? Yours Truly Riddick is pleased to present for your leisure listening, his Number 1 ROCKIN' AND ROLLIN' Pick of the Pops for this blowin' and snowin' Saturday night/Sunday morning: "That's the Way a Woman Is" by (Michael and) The Messengers -
So who remembers "That's The Way a Woman Is"? For that matter, who recollects the modestly-successful-for-the-most-part Messengers from any of the various Minnesota, Milwaukee, or Chicago or Motown incarnations (or with or without a real or imaginary 'Michael'?) Just as it is, so confusing is the lineage from the ensemble's high-school garage band origins it took a book, Do You Hear That Beat, just to make some sense of it. Not only that, it appears there was some additional "confusion" as to their arguably best-known tune's actual publishing and authorship as well...
Long story short: in 1971, what was then an assemblage of musicians known simply as "The Messengers" (despite actually having a real live Michael among its number at that time!) took a late entry from the Ohio Express franchise and released their version of That's the Way a Woman Is, topping at number 62 on the US national chart and achieving even greater hit status in the land of Sushi and Sake under the title "Ki ni naru onna no ko."
Alas and alack - although without any surrounding confusion, after marking that high point in the band's record book? The Messengers took the Last Train to Splitsville shortly thereafter - In any case, folks regardless of the history behind it all we expect you'll agree that not only IS IT a genuine goodie That's The Way a Woman Is truly rocks as a tune and at just under two minutes, is a lean clean Bubblegum machine!
