Explosion at Art Bell's Home

Post by CoastZone » 12-16-2011 01:14 PM

I will copy and paste all messages from Art.
Art Bell

There has been a explosion at our house tonight! Nobody hurt (I hope) it was a fire extinguisher, it just blew up (nobody in the room) but the house is beyond a mess. Inhaled a bunch of that stuff, like a white powder, not feeling so hot. Fire dept was here.

More when I can. Good lord, we just remodeled.

I think I got the most exposure but the girls got some as well. A fire extinguisher is supposed to save you not kill you!
It was in my radio room with about 50K of radio gear that may be toast along with my lungs. It had been in the same spot for months, always at about 70 degrees, Fire guys said it was defective, lots of pictures, I will post in time, now VERY tired.

Art Bell:

The latest news is we talked to the company that makes the fire extinguishers and they said they were recalled in 2004

I foresee a lawsuit in Art's future.

There are all kinds of classes of fire extinguishers, but odds are that he had one for electrical fires, which is good news considering all the equipment. It's also bad news because the chemical eats the crap out of PC boards and electronic circuits. Anything touched by the powder stuff is pretty much doorstop material.

We had one go off in an edit booth, and it toasted $50k of editing equipment, plus we had to have the whole HVAC system cleaned at another $20k.

I pity what Art is going through. It's just a friggin' mess.

Many, many years ago, one of ours exploded. It blew out the window in our laundry room, but since that's a segregated room, nothing else was damaged. Washer & dryer worked fine, and aside from replacing the window and having the wall plaster repaired, and the wiring replaced, we had no other damage.

I'm so glad Art is ALIVE... and okay...

So much for those who were saying he was dead...

Can you imaging had he been in the room on his ham radio when that happened? Lucky man in that respect. He showed some pictures on Facebook today. I'm sure that all that ham equipment and computers is toast at this point.

OMG !! Thank God they are all OK, so far as we know. I sure hope that inhaling some of that powdery goop does not have long-term effects on him or on Airyn and Asia. I assume that all of the Cats were out of harm's way as well.

And to think that they just remodeled and NOW THIS. And all of Art's radio equipment ........ YIKES.

Please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers; I sure am.

Believe it or not, fire extinguishers, along with SCUBA tanks and other cylinders that are under pressure, have a limited shelf life. There is/should be a date stamped physically into the cylinder that tells you when you need to get the tank a hydrostatic test to ensure its safety.

If, as Art stated, its been there months, but it may have been an old one moved and I'll bet it was way past its prime.
