Russian Historian Who Exposed Stalin's Crimes Faces Forced Psychiatric Testing

Post by Riddick » 01-09-2018 09:45 PM

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian historian whose exposure of Soviet leader Josef Stalin's crimes angered state officials is due to begin enforced psychiatric testing this week amid fears he will be falsely declared insane, his lawyer said on Tuesday.

Yuri Dmitriev, 61, is on trial in northwest Russia on charges brought by state prosecutors of involving his adopted daughter, then 11, in child pornography, of illegally possessing "the main elements of" a firearm, and of depravity involving a minor.

Some of Russia's leading cultural figures say Dmitriev was framed because his focus on Stalin's crimes - he found a mass grave with up to 9,000 bodies dating from the Soviet dictator's Great Terror in the 1930s - jars with the latter-day Kremlin narrative that Russia must not be ashamed of its past.

The narrative has taken on added importance ahead of a March presidential election which polls show incumbent Vladimir Putin, who uses his country's World War Two victory when Stalin was in charge to bolster national pride, is on track to win.

Putin asserted last year that what he called an "excessive demonization of Stalin" was being used to undermine Russia.

Dmitriev faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of the charges, which he denies.

A previous psychiatric evaluation declared him to be of sound mind and a court-sanctioned expert group found no pornographic content in nine photographs of his daughter that are at the center of the case against him, overturning the earlier findings of other experts commissioned by prosecutors.

But on Dec. 27, in an unexpected twist, the court ordered that the same nine photos be re-examined by experts for a third time. It also granted the prosecution's request that Dmitriev undergo enforced psychiatric testing to determine whether he has "sexual deviations."

However, the court declined a prosecution request to extend his detention beyond Jan. 28.

What little Truth that is left around, is dangerous to those who dare repeat it. Perhaps it has always been that way?

I think that we here in the US need to be careful about pointing fingers at other countries and their practices, and acting as if the US is above reproach. I'll be the first to admit that Russia is in a league of its own, but we have our own issues that go back a number of years as well.

If you were a member of a union in the late 19th century, early 20th century, you could be killed or tortured just because.....

Just one source.......

I saw on one site about two IWW members, initially incarcerated at Alcatraz, moved to Leavenworth, who eventually died from being tortured because they were conscientious objectors.

Speaking for yourself, of course.......or I could end up rewriting my own history, to suit others.

Maybe I am speaking only for myself - which would be sad if this were the case, but this country has a habit of pointing fingers at other countries, declaring how bad they are, and fail to take a serious look at what we've done here.

The example I gave about conscientious objectors during WWI and how they were treated was something I had not learned in school - and I doubt that the subject is taught today. And, these were not just International Workers of the World (Socialist/ Communists if that's what you choose to call them) but also Quakers, Mennonite and others who objected to fighting in a war both on religious grounds, but also because they felt that the reason for the war was in itself, a wrong reason to start a war.......

At that time, conscientious objectors were offered a choice - fight in the war, OR serve in a non-combat role. Many COs accepted the latter option, but many thousands fund themselves jailed, beaten, tortured. Some were killed.

Snippet:
In the U.S. Church denominations with long histories of peace witness (Mennonite, Amish, Hutterite, Dunkard / Church of the Brethren, Religious Society of Friends / Quaker) produced many American objectors; these men were joined by members of pacifist sects from the newer waves of immigrants, such as the Molokans and the Doukhobors, who had come from Russia after 1903 to escape service in the Czar's army. There were also many Jehovah's Witnesses, who claimed religious exemption from military service (all JW adult male were considered "ministers"). In addition there were political objectors such as the Socialists, humanitarians, and members of the I.W.W. (International Workers of the World), and those who simply did not believe in war or in that particular war.

The C.O.s in World War I were sent to military camps where they had to convince officers and other officials that they were sincere in their conscientious objection to war, which, at times, resulted in abuse from the enlisted men. One unofficial source states that 3,989 men declared themselves to be conscientious objectors when they had reached the military camps: of these, 1,300 chose noncombatant service; 1,200 were given farm furloughs; 99 went to Europe to serve with the Friends Reconstruction Unit; 450 were court-martialed and sent to prison; and 940 remained in the military camps until the Armistice was fully enacted in 1918. Recent scholarship, though, has revealed that the number was closer to 5,500 (at least), not counting the men who immediately signed up to go into the noncombatant branches of the military rather than declaring themselves to be conscientious objectors.

The absolutist C.O.s who refused to drill or carry out any noncombatant service were sentenced to many years of hard labor in federal prison at Alcatraz Island or Ft. Leavenworth U.S. Disciplinary Barracks, often suffering persecution, manacling, and solitary confinement. Most C.O.s who had been imprisoned were released by May of 1919, though some of those thought to be the most recalcitrant were kept until 1920. At least 27 C.O.s died, mostly while in prison.

And, that's only conscientious objectors in WWI. Here, incarceration is big business. We increasingly find out that people are being locked-up protesting their innocence, and decades later we find out through new evidence that they were right all along - we can't give those years back....... Yet, the prison industry makes a LOT of money off built-in inefficiencies or crappy representation in the courts.

Here's the problem.....

http://www.academia.edu/13453282/IWWs_K ... a_Red_Card

Academia? REALLY?........

Of the thousands that where not abused ,they came to help, they where the Doctors and Medics, Cooks and Bottle washers. At home front they became keepers of the home fires to keep the country going, while the men and women in the "forces" did the fighting they grew our food(farming), ran our factories, And some even wore a uniform and did important Non-combative jobs. Many are still alive that remember their contributions . They where Good Citizens, without the fighting. And should not be dismissed as the majority, who did not agree with combat.... The coin still has 2 sides.

Academia is a clearing house for posting articles across a spectrum of topics. Posting on that site does not negate the facts of the issue. How does refusing to kill someone directly correlate to torturing that person? Because that is what occurred to many people.

Or, here's another example where the government in the form of the military attacked and killed men women and children. Is this acceptable to you?????

Snippet:

The Ludlow Massacre was an attack by the Colorado National Guard and Colorado Fuel & Iron Company camp guards on a tent colony of 1,200 striking coal miners and their families at Ludlow, Colorado, on April 20, 1914. About two dozen people, including miners' wives and children, were killed. The chief owner of the mine, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., was widely criticized for the incident.

The massacre, the seminal event in the Colorado Coalfield War, resulted in the violent deaths of between 19 and 26 people; reported death tolls vary but include two women and eleven children, asphyxiated and burned to death under a single tent.[1] The deaths occurred after a daylong fight between militia and camp guards against striking workers. Ludlow was the deadliest single incident in the southern Colorado Coal Strike, which lasted from September 1913 through December 1914. The strike was organized by the United Mine Workers of America against coal mining companies in Colorado. The three largest companies involved were the Rockefeller family-owned Colorado Fuel & Iron Company, the Rocky Mountain Fuel Company, and the Victor-American Fuel Company.

In retaliation for Ludlow, the miners armed themselves and attacked dozens of mines over the next ten days, destroying property and engaging in several skirmishes with the Colorado National Guard along a 40-mile front from Trinidad to Walsenburg.[2] The entire strike would cost between 69 and 199 lives. Thomas G. Andrews described it as the "deadliest strike in the history of the United States,"[3] commonly referred to as the Colorado Coalfield War.

Believe me, there are plenty of other examples............

O mighty ugly violent deaths
AND tortured waves of pain
Our country's done some nasty things
And left a bloody stain

Lest we forget, America
Our wretched history,
Be understood: We're not THAT good
To be so uppity!!
