'Science,' They Said

Post by Riddick » 09-22-2021 12:33 PM

The scientific method used to govern much of popular American thinking. In empirical fashion scientists advised us to examine evidence and data, and then by induction come to rational hypotheses. The enemies of “science” were politics, superstition, bias, and deduction.

Yet we are now returning to our version of medieval alchemy and astrology in rejecting a millennium of the scientific method. Take the superstitions that now surround COVID-19. We now know from data that a prior case of COVID offers immunity as robust as vaccination—if not better.

Why then are Joe Biden’s various proposed vaccination mandates ignoring that scientific fact? Dr. Anthony Fauci, when asked, seemed at a loss for words. Fauci also seemed to throw out all sorts of mythical percentages needed for herd immunity, apparently in an attempt to convince the public that it will never be safe until every American is protected from COVID by vaccination only.

How can the government hector citizens that they have a moral duty and soon a legal obligation to be vaccinated, when it does not ask vaccinations of unvetted refugees flying in from Afghanistan? Or of the anticipated 2 million foreign nationals crossing illegally into the US in the current fiscal year?

Are woke political agendas discrediting science and losing public health?

We saw just that in early June 2020 when over 1,200 “health care professionals” signed a petition demanding exemptions from mandatory lockdowns and quarantines for Black Lives Matter protestors marching en masse. And they concocted medical excuses such as “vital to the national public health,” to insist that violating quarantines was less unhealthy than not pouring into the streets.

Why did both candidate Joe Biden and running mate Kamala Harris warn on the eve of the vaccination rollouts that a Trump Administration inoculation could be unsafe, but months later the Biden administration was vociferous in stating any doubts about safety were scientifically misplaced? Was there a medical breakthrough on January 20, 2020 that caused the recantation?

From rewarding wokeness in medical school admissions to the peer reviewing of scientific papers, the anti-scientific mania has polluted scientific endeavors.

“Critical race theory” would preposterously tell us that we need racism to fight racism. “Critical legal theory” ludicrously claims laws have no rational basis but simply reflect power inequities.

“Modern monetary theory” defies millennia of evidence and basic logic in stating governments can simply print money without worrying about balancing expenditures with revenues or inflating the currency to ruination.

Corporations are asked now to substitute a new woke agenda theory—”Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG)”—in lieu of market realities, rules of investment, and economic data.

Science is dying; superstition disguised as morality is returning. And we all will soon become poorer, angrier and more divided.

Checking In With The "Smart" People At Harvard

Post by Riddick » 09-22-2021 12:38 PM

Are the “smart” people really very smart? That is, do the people who score at the top on standardized tests and then turn up at the fancy universities actually have a superior level of reasoning and rationality that they can apply to solving the problems of the world? Or are they instead simply trapped in the same sorts of groupthink and mass irrationality as everyone else so afflicted?

Well, let’s consider the latest information coming out of Harvard University. Harvard — you can’t get any “smarter” than that. About a week ago Harvard President Larry Bacow sent out a communique stating “climate change is the most consequential threat facing humanity.” And how exactly do we know that? Easy — in the Harvard way, we just look to the evidence before our very eyes:

The last several months have laid at our feet undeniable evidence of the world to come—massive fires that consume entire towns, unprecedented flooding that inundates major urban areas, record heat waves and drought that devastate food supplies and increase water scarcity. Few, if any, parts of the globe are being spared as livelihoods are dashed, lives are lost, and regions are rendered unlivable.

But wait a minute Larry. Is that just apocalyptic rhetoric? Is there actually real evidence that environmental disasters have recently been occurring at some greater rate than they ever have? The truth is that Larry can’t be bothered to actually try to compare rates of droughts, floods, heat waves, hurricanes or anything else to see if they have gotten better or worse. He’s way too “smart” for that. If you want to get some real statistics, go to this page.

But forget climate change and move on to Covid-19. A year and a half into the pandemic, with a lot of data accumulated, if we know anything it’s that mask mandates don’t work (you can see here how well the one in MN worked). Well, the students are returning to Harvard, and here is the latest advice from the university on “Health & Wellbeing.” Excerpts:

Mask up. Mask indoors and wear your mask properly, fitting securely over your nose, mouth, and chin. Ensure a secure fit around all mask edges. Remove your mask only around your household/suite if possible. . . .

There are special tips for eating and drinking:

Dine in small parties of 2-4 people. Avoid table-hopping. Consider dining consistently with the same people rather than a different group at every meal. Consume your meal and immediately mask up when done.

And you thought that the reason you were attending Harvard was to have the chance to meet a lot of the other students. And topping it off there’s this dilly, the tips for how to drink a beverage while masked:

When drinking, lower your mask, take a sip, and then promptly cover your mouth and nose. If you’re taking your time between bites and sips, put your mask back on.

Obviously they don’t cite any studies or evidence showing that any of this will have any effect. They don’t have to. They’re “smart.”
