America is stunned too, at least half of us..

Post by Lord Moon » 11-04-2004 11:46 PM

At least 50 million people voted against Bush, compared to 50 million that voted for Bush.

There were approximately 100 million people that didn't vote at all. So in a sense there are at least 150 million people that didn't vote for Bush....only a quarrter of our population that did....hardly a mandate...

53 million voted for bush. How do you know that the 150 million that didn't vote didn't vote for Bush? Maybe they didn't vote for Kerry. Or Nader. I think that the sad thing is 150 million didn't vote. The sad thing isn't the 50 mil who voted for Kerry or the 50 mil who voted for Bush. The sad thing is the 150 who didn't even bother.

Here are some comments I found about Bush's election around the Internet...

"South Africans are bemoaning a black day for the world and its poorest continent - Africa - as George Bush gets ready for another for another term in office" - South Africa's Star.

~~

"I think we are going to see more dictatorship on an international scale... We are going to see even more isolation where Americans will not bother about the United Nations" - Kenyan Vice President Moody Awori, speaking in a personal capacity.

~~

"America and the world are now faced with the daunting task of preserving humanity... After four years, Mr Bush should begin to show that America's interest in the world is not driven by moral absolutism and sheer unilateralism." - Nigeria's Guardian

~~

"A Bush victory is yet another demonstration that the standard of global politics is very low and only charlatans, liars, duplicitous and cruel politicians need aspire for success...

It seems fear has won and the nightmare from it will not be limited to the shores of the US in the next four years." - Uganda's New Vision

~~

"Unilateralism will be the order of the day instead of multilateralism with the rest of the world... The American interest will be pushed more throughout the world." - Radio Benin, Cotonou

~~

Graham Allen, a Labor member of Parliament in Britain, said: "America has missed a great chance to reunite with the world. I fear the tragedy for all of us is that if America doesn't reach out to its friends, then its enemies will reach out to America."

~~

The election was followed closely — and warily — in foreign capitals. In a September poll sponsored by 10 major foreign newspapers, overwhelming majorities in eight of 10 countries — France, Spain, Canada, Britain, Japan, Australia, Mexico and South Korea — favored Kerry over Bush. Israel and Russia were the exception.

~~

Others were not optimistic. "I don't see any Clintonlike brokering of a peace deal," said Amr Shalakany, an Egyptian-American law professor at the American University in Cairo and former legal adviser to Palestinian peace negotiators. "There's a perfect fit between the neo-cons in Washington and the ruling elite in Israel in terms of perspective."

~~

In Canada, which has been increasingly wary of the Bush administration's policies, the government kept a polite silence as the airwaves in the morning were filled with incredulous questions of how-could-they. "Canadians reflexively and ideologically have been more sympathetic to the Democratic Party than Republicans running back at least 40 years," said Nelson Wiseman, a specialist in Canadian politics at the University of Toronto. Canada refused to send troops to Iraq, he noted, but under Kerry, an appeal for a more multinational force would have been difficult to resist.

~~

"America will get the president it deserves, but unfortunately so will the rest of the world," Rajinder Mathias of London wrote on a BBC Internet bulletin board.

~~

"I'm rather apprehensive about the next four years," former British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook said. "The one feature of Bush's presidency is his strong commitment to unilateralism. You can't beat international terrorism if you can't put together a coalition of countries to work together."

~~

Other critics wrung their hands over the United States' refusal to sign up to a global agreement to reduce the emissions believed to cause global warming.

~~

Previous polls have shown Bush to be broadly unpopular in many European countries. Tuesday's results served only to increase the perplexity with which many Europeans regard Americans.

~~

But many Palestinians view Bush as biased toward Israel. From his sickbed at a military hospital outside Paris, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat urged Bush to adopt a new "policy of peace" in the Middle East.

~~

The mood in the West Bank town of Ramallah was melancholy.

"The American people should have thought twice before voting for Bush," said Dr. Said Najar, a radiologist. "Most of the world hates American policy."

~~

Jordanian lawyer Mohaned Ottom said Bush's "fundamentalist" views inflame Muslim fundamentalists, making it more difficult for moderates like him.

"(Bush's) feet are in blood," Ottom said. "The election of Bush will make life more difficult for everyone."

~~

China opposed the war in Iraq and most Chinese said they were against Bush's re-election.

~~

In the Thai capital Bangkok, English-language daily The Nation said in an editorial: "The next four years are shaping up to be a volatile time, on both the security and economic fronts. With no need to worry about re-election, Bush will be free to pursue his religious and ideological goals with few constraints.

~~

Bashir in Indonesia: Militant Indonesian Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, on trial in Indonesia over the Bali bombings and other attacks, warned that President George W Bush's reelection victory spelled "disaster'' for the United States.

Bashir, who is accused of being a figurehead for the Al-Qaeda linked Jemaah Islamiah regional group accused Bush of meddling in Indonesian affairs and warned of retribution unless he stopped.

"Bush's victory will bring another disaster for America unless he changes his actions,'' Bashir told reporters as he arrived for a second day of his trial in which he faces a possible death penalty if convicted.

"America is intervening on many issues in Indonesia, they are the master in this country,'' he said.

~~

The prospect of another four years of President George W Bush in the White House brought sadness and anxiety to Cubans feeling the pinch of tightened US sanctions.

~~

Across the continent, where widespread public support for John Kerry was privately shared by many government officials, politicians were bracing themselves for the task of rebuilding bridges with Washington.

~~

Many European governments - particularly France and Germany - have been unsettled by Mr Bush's policy on Iraq and what they see as the US administration's alleged preference for “unilateral” action, its attitude to the Middle East peace process and its muscular approach to problems such as Iran's nuclear programme.

~~

Whilst a Sunni Muslim in Baghdad said: “Let Kerry win, it will give the Arab nations a chance to help Iraq. They need not fear the policies of the Democrats, because their presidents have not fought so many wars in the past, and they follow peaceful solutions. [For example] Clinton tried hard with Saddam Hussein. Kerry will win – that’s what I hope.”

I guess the Brits have a case of VMS (Victor Meldrew Syndrome).... In other words, with regards to our election results, there's a collective cry of "I don't believe it!" coming across the pond. ;) As one who suffers from a chronic case of VMS ... I can certainly empathize. ::::sigh::::

Hey alien, didn't you post some of this same stuff on the Art Bell thread or elsewhere on the ship? When you post it in more than one forum it's called spam.

Nigh on 10 years now. What a P&G blast from the past!

Super post-mortem election thread, eh? Apart from Rom it's got EVERYTHING!! Antagonized Yanks, alienated Brits, annoyed reactions, perilous predictions, factious no holds barred Bush bashing, classic Joe Quinn sturm und drang, division, polarization, all that AND CindyLouWho, too. Ah, for the glory days of discussion...

If only we had such a diversity of opinion going here now for the midterms - I'd love to see what the spin would be when the dividing and polarizing de facto despotic unitary chief exec shoe's on the other foot!

Too true on both counts, Ben! Fact is, what that was was a wanton act of sheer unadulterated cheekiness on my part -

Indeed, such as was had here was anything but what anyone outside of a demented flea would think of as a bona fide "diversity of opinion" eh!!...

When demented fleas tout diversity?
They're really saying 'think like me'!
