Power Without Principles Is Pointless

Post by Riddick » 07-08-2022 12:45 AM

Anyone who thinks America is badly governed right now might find some small comfort in that at least we aren’t Britain, because for all the Washington insanity, nothing beats the utter breakdown of politics in Westminster.

British PM Boris Johnson resigned July 6th after a terrible two-and-a-half years in office. He came to power in 2019 by winning a general election with an impressive 80-seat majority for one main reason, his promise to “Get Brexit Done.” Which he did, taking Britain out of the EU in January 2020.

You might say what happened next was bad luck. But hardly had he managed his big leap than the Coronavirus hit, after which Bojo never really got his mojo back. He began to flounder, looking for causes to tie himself to and losing touch with whatever political core he might once have had.

Johnson always hated comparisons with Trump (usually based on nothing more than their hair). He was especially stung when Joe Biden made the link. Johnson believed he was different from traditional conservatives. Perhaps he was.

And so — urged on by a small circle of advisors including his woke young girlfriend, then wife — he tried to do all he could to show he wasn’t a conservative. He ignored the UK’s border crisis, pumped money into an unreformed welfare state and raised taxes. To the extent he had any ideas they were all soggy and green.

At last year's G7, Johnson tried to impress his American counterpart by saying he wanted all our economies to start “Building back greener, and building back fairer, and in a more gender-neutral & perhaps more feminine way.” To which most conservatives said, “What does that even mean?”

Nothing, for sure. But such waffle started to show in government policy. Sure, Bojo was in power – but what did he intend to do with it? Ukraine gave him an answer of a sort, but even there he wittered away.

Some who had known and admired him for years started to wonder if there'd been an invasion of the body-snatchers. He showed how Britain could stand firmly on its own outside the EU yet never built on that promise. He never showed all the things a newly independent nation could achieve.

Instead, he wasted time. He allowed young wife Carrie to splash money around on a fancy official residence redesign. There was a scandal over some rolls of golden wallpaper and who funded them. His wife became known as Carrie Antoinette.

And then there were the parties. It leaked out slowly that during the height of the lockdowns people in Downing Street, including the PM and his wife, were having boozy get-togethers. One such party happened the night before the funeral of the Queen’s husband. The idea that Number 10 was partying while the Queen mourned her husband of 7 decades alone focused public anger.

A groping scandal involving an MP called Pincher was the final straw, because he had lied again about what he knew. Most of the government resigned, Johnson tried to appoint a new set of ministers and failed. He finally realized he could no longer govern. The party will now have to appoint a new leader.

What are the lessons of this failed premiership? Some will say Johnson was a victim of bad luck. But the fact is that the world is always like this. Everyone comes into office hoping to do one set of things and then faces events.

But lose sight of what you came in to do & you will do nothing. Great leaders like Thatcher also had to deal with events. But such people also have a core set of beliefs and principles and work doggedly to achieve them despite the whirligig.

Absent such firm foundations and the winds of mishaps, fashion and events will blow you all over the place. That is the story of Boris Johnson’s leadership. He spent his life seeking power, only to find that having achieved it he didn’t really know what to do with it other than cling on. In the end he couldn’t even do that.

England and America seem to be suffer the same messy Governments. Every thing is "Shifting" Which way , who knows. Their fear of Trump, who no longer holds any position of power is very telling, the more Fear they have, the more crazier they get. They have to be careful or they themselves are pushing, the "Woke" to Awake, that is not in their favor. Their Obsession, is there for all to see, if anything is left of them, that can see anything at all.

There are parallels with Boris's rise & fall & what's going on here. Basically Joe got his historic 81M votes for one reason: He wasn't Trump. And it got us exactly that: a not-Trump president to the extreme, & what came next was America's bad luck.

Biden's neither principled or cognizant. All he's ever cared for is to occupy the WH. That achieved, he's done all he can to show he's not a moderate (OR in charge), trying to impress his party's crazed Woke wing. Is that what he intended to do?

Who knows, when 'What's that even mean?' arises as a question when he speaks. To what extent he makes sense at all all depends on how close he sticks to the script. Faced with a poser he's not prepared for we get either incoherence or bile.

Excusing ineptness by saying it's Biden who's a victim of circumstance misses the point. A leader lacking core convictions can easily be pulled every which way by unscrupulous Woke extremists, with grave consequenses for America & the world -

Spider-Man has the line, "With great power comes great responsibility" - For Joe it's "With great power & only half a mind to do anything comes great instability"!

"Victim of Circumstance" HARDLY! The Democrats do NOT do anything that's NOT in the "Plan" My bet is Joe and Giggles where hand picked for the job of "Fall Guys", the Real President is behind the " Instruction Sheets".

How much you wanna bet there's fine print at the bottom of the sheets that says "Made In China"?

What Xi's done for Hong Kong, Biden can do for Our Democracy™
