Exciting Stuff!

TED 2010 is going on right now and there's good stuff being discussed.;)

Bill Gates on energy: Innovating to zero!

At TED2010, Bill Gates unveils his vision for the world’s energy future, describing the need for “miracles” to avoid planetary catastrophe and explaining why he’s backing a dramatically different type of nuclear reactor. The necessary goal? Zero carbon emissions globally by 2050.

Gates is right, you do need that 'vision' thing. Spending now on the R&D for the new nuclear processes is not that daunting.

Thanks for the article, PsychicWolf

The cool thing, Linn, is people who can make things happen pay attention to TED and to Bill Gates.;)

Say what you want about Microsoft folks, but since BG has left the day to day running of the company to others he has focused on some major issues and has made HUGE contributions (not just monetary) to the field of education.

Have always admired Bill Gates. And, yah, I've heard from those who say he is a predatory capitalist. To me he has always seemed much more that that.

Read an article by Gates in Time magazine last year. The subject was minimalist capitalism ;) and how he saw opportunity in investing capital in developing countries. Micro capital and micro returns, but in a balanced way. Found that, and many of his ideas to be intriguing. Love him or hate him, he is a person who has made a quantum difference in the world.

As you say, he is a force to be reckoned with. And, the TED conference is a huge platform for innovative thinking.

...from WSJ - Feb 22, 2010
General Atomics Proposes a Plant That Runs on Nuclear Waste.

Nuclear and defense supplier General Atomics announced Sunday it will launch a 12-year program to develop a new kind of small, commercial nuclear reactor in the U.S. that could run on spent fuel from big reactors.

In starting its campaign to build the helium-cooled reactor, General Atomics is joining a growing list of companies willing to place a long-shot bet on reactors so small they could be built in factories and hauled on trucks or trains.

The General Atomics program, if successful, could provide a partial solution to one of the biggest problems associated with nuclear energy: figuring out what to do with highly radioactive waste. With no agreement on where to locate a federal storage site, that waste is now stored in pools or casks on utilities' property.
