Your 'Drunk Self' May Actually Be The Real You, According To Scientists

How different is your drunk self and your sober self? The answer might surprise you.

The way that people behave under the influence of alcohol is often believed to be a totally different version of their character. After all, how many people have looked back at their antics the night before and swore that they would have never behaved in such a way if it wasn’t for the demon drink? However, this accepted wisdom may be completely wrong. According to a new study, the way that a person behaves when they are drunk may be closer to the ‘real’ version of themselves than the sober one.

"A man’s true character comes out when he’s drunk." – Charlie Chaplin

A collaborative team of researchers drawn up from Purdue University and the University of Missouri worked with a group of 156 volunteer participants to figure out how alcohol actually affects behavior. All of the volunteers were given a survey two weeks prior to the experiment. This survey asked them to self-assess the traits that they associated with the sober versions of themselves and the drunk one. For the experiment, the volunteers were divided randomly into two groups – one of which was given vodka and Sprite and the other group was just given Sprite. Those who were drinking alcohol were told to keep drinking continuously as they were given various tasks to carry out while being observed by sober individuals.

I don't know if the results of this study can be trusted. The outside observers were sober? In other words, they weren't their 'real selves'. So their observations are suspect. Same for the scientists. To do an honest job of it they should all be drunk as skunks

I think the next study should be directed by the philosophy department at the University Of Wallamaloo. They know all the great thinkers in history were three sheets to the wind! To wit:
Immanuel Kant was a real piss-ant who was very rarely stable,
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar who could drink you under the table,
David Hume could out-consume Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel,
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine who was twice as sloshed as Schlegel.

There's nothing Nietzsche couldn't teach yer 'bout the raising of the wrist,
Socrates himself was permanently pissed.

John Stewart Mill, of his own free will, on half a pint of shandy was particularly ill,
Plato, they say, could stick it away, half a crate of whisky every day,
Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle, Hobbes was fond of his dram,
And Rene Descartes was a drunken fart: "I drink, therefore I am."

Yes, Socrates himself is particularly missed -
A lovely little thinker, but a bugger when he's pissed.

A drunk man speaks a sober man's mind.

I've always believed this to be true.
