Clyburn: I never was sold on public option

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), one of the most influential congressional Democrats, said Sunday he never was on board with a robust public option in health care legislation – even though that’s long been a demand of the Democratic Party’s liberal base.

“I said way back before we went out on the August break that we ought to take a hard-look at this so-called robust public option that a lot of people had bought into, I never really bought into that,” Clyburn said on CBS's "Face the Nation."

Clyburn also defended the House version of the health care legislation, saying it covered more uninsured people (36 million) than the Senate version, which he said only covered 31 million.
